Darden Restaurants Stock: Is DRI Outperforming the Consumer Discretionary Sector?

Darden Restaurants, Inc. (DRI), headquartered in Orlando, Florida, is one of the largest full-service restaurant operators in the United States. The company owns and operates a portfolio of well-known restaurant brands, including Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, The Capital Grille, Yard House, Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen, Seasons 52, and Eddie V’s. DRI has a market cap of around $24 billion.

Companies valued at $10 billion or more are generally classified as “large-cap” stocks, and Darden Restaurants fits this criterion as the company continues to benefit from a diversified portfolio of established restaurant brands and solid same-restaurant sales growth.

DRI shares are trading 8.4% below their 52-week high of $229.76, which they touched on Aug. 13. DRI has declined 1.4% over the past three months, outpacing the broader State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF’s (XLY4.2% slump during the same time frame.

Over the longer term, Darden Restaurants has also posted a better performance, climbing 14.4% year-to-date (YTD) while XLY has declined 6%. Over the past 52 weeks, its shares have advanced 13.9%, notably exceeding XLY’s 7% fall during the same period, highlighting its relative strength within the consumer discretionary space.

Moreover, DRI has mostly been trading above its 50-day and 200-day moving averages since late May, except for some periods of fluctuations.

Darden Restaurants’ stock has risen in 2026 as investors responded to strong operating performance, particularly at its LongHorn Steakhouse brand.

The company released its fiscal 2026 results on June 25, reporting a 9.4% increase in full-year sales to $13.2 billion, while blended same-restaurant sales rose 4.5%, led by 7.2% growth at LongHorn Steakhouse and 4% at Olive Garden.

Adjusted EPS increased 11.4% to $10.64. Darden also raised its quarterly dividend and authorized a new $1.5 billion share-repurchase program, providing additional support for investor sentiment.

Moreover, Darden Restaurants has outperformed its rival, Starbucks Corporation (SBUX), which has gained 12.2% over the past 52 weeks and 12.7% on a YTD basis.

The stock has a consensus rating of “Moderate Buy" from the 29 analysts covering the stock, and the mean price target of $233.04 implies a 10.3% upside from the prevailing market prices.
