Takeda Secures FDA Approval For First-In-Class Blood Cancer Drug - Takeda Pharmaceutical Co (NYSE:TAK)

On Friday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd.‘s (NYSE: TAK ) MIMRYLO (rusfertide) for polycythemia vera, a type of blood cancer.

How MIMRYLO Combats Polycythemia Vera

Polycythemia vera forces the human body to overproduce red blood cells. This harmful overproduction dramatically increases blood thickness .

Increased viscosity places patients at high risk for life-threatening thrombotic events, which include severe complications like strokes, pulmonary embolisms, and deep vein thrombosis.

To prevent these severe health events, medical providers focus on keeping a patient’s hematocrit level strictly below 45%.

MIMRYLO functions as a hepcidin mimetic designed to regulate iron distribution across the body. By actively managing this iron distribution, the therapy stops red blood cell overproduction and effectively controls hematocrit levels.

VERIFY Study Drives FDA Approval

The regulatory agency based its approval decision on compelling clinical data generated by the global Phase 3 VERIFY study.

Trending

This extensive trial included 293 polycythemia vera patients. During the trial, MIMRYLO successfully met all required efficacy endpoints and consistently demonstrated a highly favorable safety profile.

Participants who received the new medication alongside their current standard care achieved a higher response rate compared to patients taking a placebo.

Treated individuals experienced superior hematocrit control, a notable reduction in their need for routine phlebotomy, and marked improvements in overall fatigue.

An open-label extension of the VERIFY trial remains ongoing. The company plans to share further clinical findings at upcoming medical conferences.

Development Collaboration

Takeda will commercialize MIMRYLO under the worldwide license and collaboration agreement entered into in 2024 with Protagonist Therapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ: PTGX ).

Protagonist discovered rusfertide (PTG-300) and had primary responsibility for its development through Phase 3, with Takeda assuming responsibility for NDA submission and commercialization following Protagonist’s opt-out election in April 2026 .

FDA approval of MIMRYLO triggers $275 million in payments to Protagonist, consisting of a $200 million opt-out fee and a separate $75 million approval milestone.

Protagonist is eligible to receive up to an additional $875 million in total potential milestone payments, as well as tiered royalties ranging from 14% to 29% on worldwide net sales, corresponding to approximately 21% on a weighted-average basis at $1.5 billion in annual sales .

TAK Price Action: Takeda Pharmaceutical shares were down 0.19% at $17.99 at the time of publication on Monday, according to Benzinga Pro data .
