PFG Enhances Retirement Plans Through Partner Expansion

Principal Financial Group, Inc.’s PFG expansion of its Featured Partner Program should strengthen its Retirement and Income Solutions business by making private-market investments more accessible within defined-contribution (DC) retirement plans. The program brings together asset managers, trust companies and fiduciaries to develop collective investment trust (CIT)-based solutions that combine public and private assets.

The expansion is strategically important as it moves Principal Financial beyond traditional retirement-plan administration toward a broader investment-solutions platform. By combining the private-market expertise of leading asset managers with PFG’s retirement-plan and recordkeeping infrastructure, the company can provide plan sponsors with more diversified investment options while potentially attracting more retirement assets and deepening long-term client relationships.

The expanded program enables Principal Financial to offer plan sponsors access to private-market strategies alongside traditional public-market investments. Greater exposure to private assets can enhance portfolio diversification and potentially improve long-term risk-adjusted returns, making PFG’s retirement solutions more attractive to plan sponsors seeking broader investment options for participants.
Principal Financial to develop CITs that combine public and private strategies for target-date funds, target-risk funds, managed accounts and other asset-allocation solutions. Integrating private-market exposure into professionally managed products could make these strategies easier for retirement-plan participants to access without requiring plan sponsors to build the necessary investment and administrative infrastructure themselves.

The initiative could also create opportunities for asset and fee growth. As more retirement assets are allocated to CITs and other professionally managed solutions containing private-market investments, Principal could benefit from higher assets under management and administration, while strengthening its relationships with plan sponsors. The program also allows external investment managers to leverage Principal Financial’s retirement-plan platform and recordkeeping capabilities, creating a mutually beneficial distribution model.

The expansion includes major private-market managers such as AllianceBernstein, Apollo, Ares, Blackstone, Blue Owl, Carlyle, KKR, Morgan Stanley Investment Management and Partners Group. These partnerships broaden PFG’s investment ecosystem and enhance the competitiveness of its retirement offerings, potentially helping PFG capture a greater share of the growing demand for private-market exposure within DC plans.

Overall, the Featured Partner Program expansion should aid PFG’s Retirement and Income Solutions business by broadening investment choices, strengthening its value proposition to plan sponsors, supporting asset growth and creating additional opportunities for fee-generating retirement solutions.
