Top Wide-Moat Stocks to Buy for Steady Long-Term Returns

An updated edition of the September 10, 2026 article.

A wide moat describes companies with durable competitive advantages that shield them from rivals and support lasting profitability. Popularized by Warren Buffett, the term draws an analogy to a medieval castle protected by a broad moat — making it hard for competitors to breach or threaten the company’s market position.

Among the companies that are recognized for their wide moats are Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited TSM, Texas Instruments Incorporated TXN, UnitedHealth Group Incorporated UNH and Lockheed Martin Corporation LMT. These companies operate in industries with high barriers to entry, making it difficult for rivals to challenge their positions and ensure consistent revenue growth.

Wide-moat companies typically benefit from several key factors such as brand strength, network effects, high customer switching costs, regulatory protections, and economies of scale. These characteristics make it challenging for new entrants or existing competitors to erode their market share. Companies with wide moats typically benefit from strong pricing power, stable profit margins, and the capacity to reinvest in their businesses, further reinforcing their competitive advantages.

The case for investing in wide-moat businesses is rooted in their ability to deliver steady, long-term returns. In contrast to companies operating in fiercely competitive industries, where profits can be highly volatile due to pricing pressures and rivalry, wide-moat businesses tend to show greater resilience during economic downturns and market turbulence. Their solid market positions and robust balance sheets enable them to endure challenges that might seriously impact less competitive firms.

Investing in wide-moat companies can be an effective strategy for building long-term wealth, as these businesses typically produce steady cash flows, navigate market volatility with resilience, and deliver value to their shareholders through dividends and stock price growth. While no investment is entirely risk-free, companies with strong economic moats provide a level of durability that many investors seek in an ever-changing market. Our Wide Moat Screen makes it easy to identify high-potential stocks at any given time — just like the ones mentioned above.

Taiwan Semiconductor has a dominant position in the semiconductor foundry market, with leadership in artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) chip manufacturing. It enjoys a formidable moat due to its technological superiority and scale. As the primary manufacturer for companies like Apple Inc. AAPL and NVIDIA Corporation NVDA, Taiwan Semiconductor operates with a cost advantage. It maintains its dominance by investing heavily in advanced chip fabrication, making it nearly impossible for new entrants to compete at the same level.

The ongoing AI boom has placed Taiwan Semiconductor at the center of a multi-year structural growth cycle. The company has established itself as the preferred manufacturing partner for AI accelerators, including graphics processing units (GPUs) and custom silicon developed by major players. TSM is positioned to benefit from sustained AI infrastructure investment. The 2-nanometer manufacturing ramp is another important growth driver. The technology contributed 8% of wafer revenues in the third quarter, and management expects its ramp-up to support fourth-quarter performance. TSM also expects annual capacity for its N2 family of technologies to more than double in 2027, supported by demand from smartphones and HPC applications.

TSM is also working with ASML Holding N.V. ASML to advance next-generation chipmaking technology. In September 2026, the companies announced an industry initiative to transition to 12-inch photomasks for high-numerical-aperture (High-NA) extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography. The initiative targets a pilot line by 2031, with advanced-node production readiness targeted for 2033. The larger photomasks are expected to improve manufacturing productivity and reduce chipmaking costs, supporting the industry's longer-term push toward more advanced semiconductors.

Taiwan Semiconductor’s aggressive capital expenditure strengthens its competitive advantage. Its global expansion strategy also adds to its growth potential. It has begun high-volume production at its Arizona facility, while additional fabs are under construction. The company's 2026 capital expenditure budget of $60 billion to $64 billion reflects its commitment to expanding manufacturing capacity. These investments reflect this Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) stock’s long-term vision of securing global supply-chain resilience while meeting growing customer demand. Texas Instruments has a strong position in the foundational analog and embedded processing semiconductor markets, which are critical for long-term growth in key industries like industrial, automotive, personal electronics and data center. It serves diverse end markets that balance individual ups and downs in multiple ways. For instance, the seasonality in the personal electronics business is balanced out by the industrial, communications, automotive and data center segments.

The company serves individuals and corporations, industrial customers and infrastructure providers. The emergence of 5G technology is aiding the performance of the company's analog products in the communication equipment market. All these are making its revenue stream relatively steady despite the dynamism in each of the markets served. This is very important for a company like Texas Instruments because it has huge facilities of its own that come along with high fixed costs.

Texas Instruments is increasing internal production to gain greater control over supply, quality and cost. The company continues to target more than 95% internal wafer production by 2030, with a large portion using 300-millimeter wafers. Management states that an unpackaged chip built on 300-millimeter wafers costs approximately 40% less than one built on 200-millimeter wafers. Texas Instruments has available cleanroom capacity in its Richardson, Sherman and Lehi facilities. Management plans to install additional equipment according to demand, supporting dependable supply and cost efficiency as production volumes increase.

Texas Instruments, a Zacks Rank #1 stock, is one of the largest suppliers of analog and digital signal processing integrated circuits. The company’s compelling product lineup and efficient manufacturing strategies are anticipated to drive long-term earnings. Texas Instruments continues investing in analog and embedded processing products while nearing completion of its elevated multiyear manufacturing buildout. TXN maintained its 2026 spending range of $2 billion to $3 billion, potentially toward the higher end depending on equipment deliveries. The company is also expanding assembly and testing capacity in Malaysia while preparing additional Lehi production space. These investments support future revenue growth and manufacturing efficiency as demand develops.

UnitedHealth Group has the largest and most diverse membership base within the managed-care organization market, which gives it significant competitive advantages. It has built its prescription drug business through the Optum Rx division, with the acquisition of Catamaran. The company has acquired a number of competing healthcare providers. These acquisitions have transformed it from a pure health insurer to a comprehensive healthcare provider.

UnitedHealth’s revenues have grown consistently over the last few years. A strong market position and an attractive core business that continues to be driven by new deals, renewed agreements and the expansion of service offerings should help it retain its revenue momentum. Also, improving policy visibility is acting as a tailwind. A continued rise in U.S. healthcare spending, driven by an aging population and higher chronic disease prevalence, further supports long-term demand.

UnitedHealth’s health service business, branded Optum, remains a central growth engine and a key pillar of diversification. Despite the temporary disruption from the Change Healthcare cyberattack in February 2024, its revenues rose 11.6% in 2024 and 7% in 2025, reaching $196.2 billion in the first nine months of 2026. Growth continues to be supported by OptumHealth’s integrated value-based care model and investments in AI-enabled technologies. Optum Insight is also gaining traction with AI-driven solutions, while Optum Rx is benefiting from biosimilar adoption and pharmacy operations. These efforts could support longer-term growth and margin expansion.

Membership trends in UnitedHealth’s commercial segment remain encouraging. Enrollment increased 2.4% and 8.8% year over year in 2023 and 2024, respectively, reaching 29.7 million at the end of 2025. As of Sept. 30, 2026, commercial membership stood at 29.8 million, while fee-based membership increased to 22.2 million from 21.5 million a year ago. This expansion supports UnitedHealth's presence among employer-sponsored customers. UNH currently has a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).

Lockheed Martin is one of the largest defense contractors in the world, mainly focusing on defense, space, intelligence, homeland security and information technology, including cyber security.  Lockheed Martin’s broad product offerings allow it to secure major defense contracts, which in turn boost its backlog count. The company remains the largest U.S. defense contractor with a steady order flow from the Pentagon and other U.S. allies. Apart from enjoying a strong forte on the domestic front, Lockheed Martin’s products are also well-acclaimed in the international market.

Lockheed Martin, a Zacks Rank #2 stock, is benefiting from rising U.S. and allied defense spending, increased inventory replenishment and growing demand for missile defense, advanced aircraft, munitions and space systems. Its diversified portfolio of established defense programs, including the F-35, PAC-3, THAAD, HIMARS, PrSM and Aegis, positions it to capitalize on these opportunities. Additional multiyear agreements for PAC-3 and the Joint Advanced Tactical Missile in the third quarter of 2026, along with international partnerships and investments in autonomous systems and artificial intelligence, further strengthen its growth prospects.

Lockheed Martin's backlog reached a record $292 billion as of Sept. 27, 2026, compared with $230 billion at the end of the second quarter, while its third-quarter book-to-bill ratio was 4.0, reflecting strong order momentum. Major awards included the multiyear PAC-3 agreement worth up to $58.6 billion, a seven-year THAAD agreement valued at $35 billion and a $4.4 billion C-130J contract. The company is investing more than $8 billion through 2030 to expand manufacturing capacity, modernize facilities and strengthen its supply chain. These investments, combined with a higher 2026 sales outlook of $80-$82 billion, should support future growth as new contracts translate into deliveries.
