Drivers, changes, and outlook
- Management attributed the Q3 revenue decline principally to lower orders from several large consumer-electronics customers, following elevated investment in OLED display and smartphone manufacturing in 2017. Excluding consumer electronics, revenue increased approximately 6% in Q3 and 23% for the nine-month period.
- Logistics growth partly offset the weakness. Q3 revenue increased 7% in the Americas, but declined 21% in Europe and 11% in Asia. Application-specific customer solutions revenue also declined year over year.
- Gross margin improved slightly in Q3, mainly due to a lower share of application-specific solutions; nine-month gross margin was lower than the prior-year period because unfavorable product mix offset that benefit. Operating expenses rose 10% in Q3 and 21% over nine months, reflecting headcount and other growth investments.
- Management expected Q4 revenue to decline sequentially from Q3, citing weaker consumer-electronics sales and anticipated lower demand from China. It expected Q4 gross margin to remain within its historical mid-70% range but below Q3. No specific full-year revenue or earnings guidance was provided. Management targets annual R&D spending of 10%–15% of revenue.
- Q3 tax expense included a $7.7 million reduction from revised Tax Act estimates; management said further revisions could be needed in Q4 as guidance develops. The filing also notes that tax reserves could decline by approximately $1.2–$1.3 million over the next 12 months if certain statutes of limitations expire.
Risks, contingencies, and other notable items
Key disclosed risks include dependence on large customers and consumer-electronics and automotive markets; global economic conditions and tariffs; customer demand and product transitions; competition, technology changes, suppliers, foreign exchange, cybersecurity, and tax exposure. The company uses short-term economic and longer-term cash-flow foreign-exchange hedges. Management said pending routine legal matters were not expected to materially affect financial position, liquidity, or results. The ERP system went into service in Q3, and related controls were modified or added; management concluded disclosure controls were effective at quarter-end.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Whether consumer-electronics and China demand weakness persists, and whether logistics growth continues to offset it.
- How Q4 sequential revenue and gross margin compare with management’s stated expectations.
- Whether operating expenses and headcount investments convert into growth, given the year-over-year margin decline.
- Potential further Tax Act estimate changes, tax-reserve releases, and the resulting effective tax rate.
- Cash and investment levels after continued repurchases, dividends, and capital spending; timing of the new $200 million repurchase authorization.
- Successful operation and control effectiveness of the new ERP system.
