Financial position and liquidity
- At June 30, cash and cash equivalents were $816.8 million and short-term investments were $309.0 million, versus $909.9 million and $206.3 million, respectively, at December 31, 2017.
- Total assets were $2.53 billion; total liabilities were $358.3 million. Debt totaled $47.2 million, including $3.6 million current. No amounts were drawn on the revolving credit facilities; unused credit lines and overdraft facilities were $109.6 million.
- Six-month capital expenditures were $96.5 million. Investing activities used $228.3 million, including $128.2 million of net investment purchases; financing activities used $42.2 million, mainly reflecting $51.1 million of treasury-stock purchases.
- Cash declined $93.1 million over the six months to $816.8 million, including a $31.1 million adverse effect from exchange rates. Inventory rose to $376.0 million from $307.7 million at year-end.
Material changes and management commentary
- Q2 revenue rose 12.0% year over year; six-month revenue rose 18.0%. High-power CW laser sales increased 19.7% in Q2 and 27.3% for the first half. QCW sales fell 31.8% in Q2 and 28.6% for the first half, attributed to the expected reduction in consumer-electronics investment-cycle demand.
- Gross margin improved in both periods, which management attributed to product mix, manufacturing efficiencies and lower inventory provisions, partly offset by lower average selling prices.
- Q2 net income margin was 29.4%, compared with 28.2% a year earlier; first-half margin was 29.5%, versus 27.3%. Higher operating expenses included increased R&D, sales and marketing, and general and administrative spending.
- First-half operating cash flow increased $75.4 million year over year, but inventory absorbed $91.0 million of cash, compared with $25.8 million in the prior-year period.
- Q2 materials-processing growth reflected strength in cutting, sintering/3D printing and laser systems. Management expects sintering and 3D-printing shipments to be lower in the remainder of 2018 following strong first-half sales.
Outlook, risks and unusual items
- Management expected 2018 capital expenditures of $170 million to $190 million, primarily to expand facilities and equipment capacity. The filing does not provide a specific revenue or earnings forecast.
- Key disclosed risks include foreign-exchange volatility, customer concentration (the five largest customers represented 28% of first-half sales; one customer represented 13%), inventory conversion and demand, pricing pressure, and dependence on continued customer acceptance and growth.
- Foreign-currency translation generated a $52.0 million first-half loss in other comprehensive income. For Q2, a $2.1 million foreign-exchange loss was recorded in operating expenses; the first half recorded a $3.2 million gain.
- The effective tax rate was 25.4% for the first half, versus 26.3% in 2017. First-half tax expense included $7.6 million related to GILTI, partly offset by a $2.5 million FDII benefit. Germany and Japan tax audits were expected to start later in 2018.
- IPG acquired German laser-systems integrator robot concept GmbH during Q2 for approximately $4.5 million; purchase-price allocations remained preliminary. The company reported no ongoing legal proceedings management estimated would materially affect its financial statements and stated it complied with debt covenants.
- After quarter-end, the board authorized a new $125 million anti-dilutive share-repurchase program. IPG adopted ASC 606 in 2018; management said its ongoing effect on net income was expected to be immaterial.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Whether demand weakness in QCW lasers and the expected slowdown in sintering/3D-printing shipments affect second-half growth.
- Whether elevated inventory and planned capital expenditures convert into sales, operating cash flow and capacity utilization as expected.
- How customer concentration, currency movements and pricing pressure influence revenue and margins.
- The final purchase-price allocation for robot concept GmbH, tax-audit outcomes and the effect of tax-law provisions.
- Execution and limits of the new $125 million repurchase program and the company’s liquidity needs for acquisitions and investment.
