Material Changes Versus the Prior Comparable Period

  • Second-quarter sales declined 7.5%, primarily because of lower distributor sales in Scandinavia and Asia. Six-month sales increased 2.2%, driven by higher Asian OEM sales and improved domestic distributor sales.
  • Domestic sales increased to approximately $4.083 million in the quarter and $7.906 million for the six months. Export sales declined in the quarter to approximately $2.604 million but increased for the six months to approximately $5.131 million.
  • Gross margin declined 380 basis points in the quarter and 200 basis points for the six months. Management attributed the decline primarily to product, customer and channel mix, including a greater proportion of lower-margin OEM sales.
  • SG&A was essentially unchanged in dollars, although SG&A increased to 29.7% of quarterly sales from 27.5%.
  • Quarterly net income declined 64% and six-month net income declined 22%. Lower gross profit was the primary driver.
  • Operating cash flow declined by $980,522. Management attributed approximately $800,000 of the decrease to advance customer payments received in the prior-year period for products shipped in the subsequent quarter.
  • Unauthorized-transaction-related costs declined to a $3,404 recovery in the quarter and $34,096 of net costs for the six months, compared with $37,475 and $74,950, respectively, in the prior-year periods.

Guidance, Outlook, Risks and Unusual Items

  • The anticipated effective income tax rate for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2017 is approximately 38% to 40%.
  • Distributors in Scandinavia and Asia reportedly held excess inventory, which reduced purchases.
