Material changes versus comparable periods

  • Q3 net income increased 32.8%; nine-month net income rose 35.5%. Management attributed the improvement chiefly to higher net interest income, driven by loan and earning-asset growth and lower funding costs.
  • Loans increased 9.3% from year-end, with commercial loans up $33.7 million and commercial real estate loans up $4.6 million. Residential and consumer loans declined modestly.
  • Deposits increased $47.4 million, or 10.8%, from year-end. Management cited customer deposits associated with natural-gas leasing activity in the region and competitive certificate-of-deposit offerings.
  • Nonperforming assets declined to $8.805 million from $10.292 million at year-end, primarily as foreclosed assets fell. However, nonaccrual loans increased to $7.977 million from $6.513 million.
  • Nine-month noninterest income rose to $4.474 million from $3.338 million, including a $1.673 million gain on sale of foreclosed commercial property and increased wealth-management revenue following a 2010 business acquisition.

Outlook, risks and unusual items

  • No specific earnings or financial guidance was provided. Management said it believed liquidity was adequate for current and future obligations and planned to continue monitoring interest-rate exposure and adjusting loan, deposit and investment strategies.
  • Management cited weak economic and employment conditions, credit risk, changes in interest rates, funding costs, and banking regulation as significant risks. It described the local economy as affected by weak labor markets and household purchasing-power pressures.
  • The company’s interest-rate simulation estimated net interest income declines of 2.8% under an instantaneous parallel +200-basis-point shock and 6.1% under a -200-basis-point shock; management said results were within policy limits. Separately, the one-year cumulative rate-sensitive-assets-to-liabilities ratio was 1.23.
  • The company recorded a $509,000 prepayment penalty in year-to-date expenses after early repayment of a $5.0 million FHLB advance. It also reported flood-related costs at four banking offices, contributing to higher occupancy and equipment expenses.
  • Unfunded loan commitments and standby letters of credit totaled $71.670 million; standby letters of credit were $16.740 million, with reported collateral value of approximately $15.987 million. Management said no allowance for off-balance-sheet credit losses was necessary.
  • Unrealized gains on available-for-sale securities increased accumulated other comprehensive income by $4.779 million, net of tax, during the nine months. The company recognized $87,000 of year-to-date other-than-temporary impairment charges on two equity securities.
  • Management reported no material change in internal controls, no legal proceedings, and no changes to previously disclosed risk factors. The filing states that interim results are not necessarily indicative of future results.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether the rise in nonaccrual loans and classified commercial exposures develops into higher charge-offs or additional allowance needs; net charge-offs were $475,000 year to date, versus $1.469 million in 2010.
  • How sustainable earnings are after considering the $1.673 million property-sale gain, the $509,000 debt prepayment penalty, and higher personnel and flood-related costs.
  • Whether deposit growth linked to local gas-drilling activity and promotional time-deposit rates remains stable, and how deposit pricing affects margins and liquidity.
  • The assumptions behind the reported interest-rate shock results, including the modeled decline under both rate scenarios and management’s stated policy-limit assessment.
  • Whether loan growth, off-balance-sheet commitments, and the $90.7 million of pledged securities leave sufficient flexibility to meet funding needs.
