Organic net sales declined 6.3%, excluding a favorable $12.0 million foreign-currency impact. Laboratory Solutions sales declined 3.8% reported and 4.5% organically, while Bioscience Production sales declined 9.5% reported and 10.0% organically. Management attributed the declines primarily to reduced demand in biopharma and healthcare end markets.
Operating expenses increased by $30.6 million, primarily because of restructuring and severance charges, transformation expenses, and inflationary pressure on salaries. Q1 2024 included $23.2 million of restructuring and severance charges and $13.3 million of transformation expenses, compared with $4.7 million and no transformation expenses, respectively, in Q1 2023.
The effective income tax rate increased to 25.1% from 22.0%, primarily due to valuation allowances against deferred tax assets not expected to be realized. Lower interest expense, resulting from debt repayments over the prior twelve months, partially offset the decline in operating income.
Cash flow, liquidity, debt, and balance sheet
- Operating cash flow was $141.6 million, down from $219.5 million in Q1 2023.

- Unused credit-facility availability was $1.018 billion, consisting of $43.4 million under the receivables facility and $975.0 million under the revolving credit facility. Total liquidity, including cash, was $1.253 billion.

- Operating cash flow decreased $77.9 million and free cash flow decreased $84.6 million.
- Debt decreased by approximately $213.6 million from December 31, 2023, primarily due to term-loan repayments, partially offset by receivables-facility borrowings.

Outlook, commentary, risks, contingencies, and unusual items
The filing does not provide explicit quantitative full-year revenue, earnings, or cash-flow guidance. Management stated that customer demand and inventory levels continue to normalize following the COVID-19 pandemic. Supply-chain constraints, inflationary pressures, product mix, and foreign-currency movements may continue to affect results. The company is using pricing and productivity measures to address cost pressures and is pursuing a publicly announced cost-transformation initiative.
Key risks include weaker consumer, business, or government spending; dependence on certain suppliers and raw materials; supply-chain disruption; competition; customer and distributor relationships; interest-rate and foreign-currency exposure; substantial indebtedness; the ability to generate sufficient cash flow; cybersecurity and information-system risks; regulatory and environmental compliance; product liability; and potential impairment of goodwill and intangible assets.
At March 31, 2024, Avantor reported a $2.4 million accrued obligation for groundwater remediation in New Jersey, with undiscounted payments of $3.8 million through 2046, and a $1.1 million liability for remediation and monitoring at a site in Poland. Management reported no outstanding litigation expected to result in material losses if decided adversely.
The company had $222.7 million, or 94.8%, of cash held by non-U.S. subsidiaries, which may be subject to taxes upon repatriation. The applicable financial covenant was not triggered because the company had not drawn more than 35% of its revolving credit facility. Management concluded that disclosure controls and procedures were effective as of March 31, 2024.
