Remaining repurchase authorization was approximately $67.9M.
Changes, outlook and risks
Revenue and profitability improved from the prior-year quarter, with licensing growth the principal driver. Higher newly acquired intangible-asset amortization increased licensing costs. Other income was lower than the prior year, which included a non-recurring government grant; current-period currency translation losses also weighed on other income/expense. YTD comparisons include an extra week in FY2016, which management said added some operating expenses without a proportionate revenue contribution.
Management stated that available liquidity and operating cash flows should meet anticipated cash requirements for at least the next 12 months. The filing gives no specific revenue or earnings guidance. Growth initiatives advanced: Dolby Cinema exhibitors had committed to 220 screens worldwide, with just over 30 launched; Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos content and device adoption were expanding. These initiatives remain subject to adoption, deployment, competition and execution risks.
Key risks include dependence on licensees’ product shipments and accurate royalty reporting; declining PC and optical-disc markets; competition and pricing pressure; patent expirations and unauthorized use of IP, particularly in some emerging markets; and uncertainty around new offerings. The company also cited foreign currency and international regulatory exposure, uncertainty following the U.K. vote to leave the EU, and product supply and security risks. Legal proceedings were described as not expected to have a material adverse effect, although outcomes are uncertain. Unrecognized tax benefits were $67.7M, of which $55.6M would reduce the effective tax rate if recognized. Contractual commitments totaled $228.9M, including $134.0M of naming-rights commitments and $73.9M of operating leases.
