Material changes and management commentary
- Revenue growth was slight: acquisitions contributed 1.9%, while comparable sales declined 0.9% and foreign currency and other effects reduced sales by 0.7%.
- Management cited strategic pricing and sourcing initiatives for the gross-margin improvement. Higher personnel, rent and technology costs contributed to increased operating expenses.
- Q1 net income included $83 million of restructuring and other costs. Excluding these costs, adjusted net income and adjusted EBITDA increased year over year; these are non-GAAP measures.
- In February 2024, the company initiated a global restructuring involving a U.S. voluntary retirement offer and optimization of certain distribution centers, stores and other facilities. It expects up to $200 million of costs in 2024 and substantial completion by the end of 2025; additional unanticipated charges are possible.
- The company raised its annualized dividend 5.3% to $4.00 per share for 2024, from $3.80 in 2023. The declared quarterly dividend was $1.00 per share.
Outlook, risks and contingencies
