Earnings Preview: What To Expect From M&T Bank’s Report

Buffalo, New York-based M&T Bank Corporation (MTB) is a diversified U.S. regional bank providing commercial and retail banking, mortgage lending, wealth management, and investment services. With a market cap of $27.9 billion, M&T has a strong presence across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, serving consumers, small businesses, middle-market companies, and institutional clients.

MTB is set to announce its Q3 results before the markets open on Friday, Oct. 16. Ahead of the event, analysts expected MTB to deliver an EPS of $5, up 2.7% from $4.87 reported in the year-ago quarter. The company has surpassed the Street’s bottom-line estimates in all of the past four quarters, which is notable.

MTB stock prices have gained 9.7% over the past 52 weeks, lagging behind the S&P 500 Index’s ($SPX) 15.2% surge. However, the stock has outpaced the State Street Financial Services Select Sector SPDR Fund’s (XLF) marginal returns during the same time frame.

On Sept. 16, M&T Bank shares fell 3.9% in the afternoon session as investors reacted to the Federal Reserve’s unexpected rate hike and signals of further tightening. Rising rates and persistent inflation concerns raised fears that tighter financial conditions could slow loan growth and capital-markets activity, weighing on regional banks such as M&T.

Analysts remain optimistic on the stock’s prospects. MTB holds a consensus “Moderate Buy” rating among the 21 analysts covering the stock. That’s based on five “Strong Buys,” one “Moderate Buy,” 14 “Holds,” and one “Strong Sell.” Its mean price target of $258.68 suggests an 18.9% upside potential from current price levels.
