Is YPF a Buy as Shale Growth Collides With Rising Execution Risk?

YPF Sociedad Anónima YPF is pushing deeper into Vaca Muerta as shale output rises, refining runs at record levels and free cash flow improves. The operating gains are arriving while the shares trade below key energy-sector valuation benchmarks.

The counterweight is execution. Transportation capacity must keep pace with production, and Argentina LNG still faces financing, construction and final approval milestones. Investors must weigh those demands against YPF's improving production mix and cash generation.

YPF’s Shale Shift Improves the Production Mix

Shale oil production reached 212,700 barrels per day in the second quarter of 2026, up 47% year over year and equal to 80% of total oil production. Management expects full-year shale output near 215,000 barrels per day and a December exit rate around 250,000 barrels per day.

Total lifting costs fell 31.4% to $8.40 per barrel of oil equivalent, while the shale oil hub operated at about $4 per barrel of oil equivalent. Chevron Corporation CVX provides useful Vaca Muerta context, with a non-operated 50% interest in Loma Campana and participation in the VMOS export pipeline consortium.

YPF’s Refining Gains Add Cash Flow Support

Crude processing reached a record 350,800 barrels per day as refinery utilization increased to 103.8%. That allowed YPF to avoid diesel and gasoline imports, supply local refiners and expand exports. Local fuel volumes increased 10%, and market share rose to 59%.

YPF generated $824 million of free cash flow despite $1.34 billion of capital spending. Net debt declined to $7.65 billion and net leverage fell to 1.09X, the lowest level in 11 years. Those figures give the company more financial capacity as investment accelerates.

YPF's Earnings Outlook Adds Support but Signals Moderation

The Zacks Consensus Estimate for YPF’s third-quarter 2026 earnings is pegged at $1.48 per share, implying 76.2% growth from 84 cents per share. For the fourth quarter, the consensus mark stands at $1.18 per share, compared with a loss of $1.67 per share in the year-ago period. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for full-year 2026 is $7.50 per share, against a loss of $2.05 per share in 2025.

The near-term earnings outlook adds support to YPF’s improving operating and cash-flow profile as shale production expands. However, the consensus estimate drops to $5.88 per share for 2027, representing a 21.6% decline. That expected moderation tempers the earnings momentum and keeps capital intensity and execution risk central to YPF’s investment case.

YPF Trades at a Discount to Key Benchmarks

YPF trades at 7.7X forward 12-month earnings, below the Zacks sub-industry at 10.7X and the broader Oils-Energy sector at 12.2X. That places its earnings multiple below both benchmarks.

The comparison is less pronounced against YPF's own history. Its five-year median forward multiple is 3.7X. The stock therefore screens cheaply versus current industry and sector benchmarks, but not versus its longer-term median.

YPF Still Faces Capital and LNG Execution Risk

Management raised 2026 capital spending guidance to $5.8 billion-$6.2 billion, with about 70% directed toward shale. VMOS was about 80% complete as of July, with commercial operation targeted by year-end and first oil expected in early 2027. Until then, facilities and transportation execution remain important to the production ramp.

Argentina LNG adds another capital requirement. The San Matías pipeline needs about $1.3 billion of investment, while YPF targets a final investment decision in the fourth quarter of 2026. Ecopetrol S.A. EC, another Latin American integrated energy company, is also allocating 2026 capital across production, refining and transportation, highlighting the funding demands of an integrated model.

YPF’s Hold Signal Meets Strong Style Scores

The bottom line remains balanced. YPF's shale growth, cash generation and peer valuation discount are offset by higher capital needs and execution risk. The stock currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), which does not meet the Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) or #2 (Buy) threshold emphasized for new purchases. You can see the complete list of today’s Zacks Rank #1 stocks here.

YPF has a Value Score of A, Growth Score of A, Momentum Score of B and a VGM Score of A. Those grades indicate favorable characteristics across the major investing styles, but the Style Scores are designed to complement the Zacks Rank. For now, the combination supports a measured stance rather than a decisive buy call.
