Zumiez Gains From Private Label Expansion & Category Momentum

Zumiez Inc. ZUMZ is strengthening its growth strategy through greater private label penetration and a diversified merchandise mix. Management is focused on refreshing the product assortment with distinctive, fashion-forward offerings while maintaining a broad range of categories that appeal to its core action-sports and streetwear customer base. The strategy is helping ZUMZ enhance product differentiation and customer engagement.

Private label remains a particularly important part of this strategy. Private label represented 34% of sales, the highest penetration level in the company's history. Management believes the business provides flexibility to identify emerging trends and develop products that resonate with customers, while enhancing the company’s margin profile.

Product newness is another key catalyst. Zumiez introduced more than 150 new and emerging brands in fiscal 2025. Management said that the momentum from those additions has carried into fiscal 2026. Newness is becoming an increasingly important component of the sales mix, with distinctive offerings continuing to generate strong customer response.

The diversified category mix is reinforcing this opportunity. Men’s led positive comparable-sales growth in the first quarter of fiscal 2026, followed by hardgoods, women’s and accessories, demonstrating strength across several major merchandise areas. Footwear was the only negative comping category. Management attributed the broad-based performance to its merchandising approach and investments in product newness and private label expansion.

Private label is positioned to support profitability. Management said the business will continue to be an important driver of margin expansion, supported by pricing discipline and full-price selling. Zumiez continues to target 50-100 basis points of operating-margin growth in fiscal 2026, assuming no significant deterioration in the consumer environment.
