NOC's Q3 Earnings Call Highlights 2027 Growth and B-21 Spending

Northrop Grumman Corporation NOC used its third-quarter 2026 earnings call to outline accelerating sales growth, improving margins and heavier investment in B-21 production capacity.

Management also raised its 2026 earnings outlook, while analysts pressed executives on development risks, the timing of future growth and opportunities beyond traditional defense programs.

NOC Sees Faster Growth in 2027

Chief financial officer John Greene projected 2027 sales growth of 5% to 7%, with increases across all four business segments. He expects segment operating income to outpace sales, with margins expanding 10 to 20 basis points from the 2026 guidance midpoint.

During questions from Morgan Stanley, Greene said the company would refine its growth range after further internal planning. Defense Systems and B-21-related Aeronautics activity remain prominent growth drivers.

Responding to Goldman Sachs, Chair, CEO and President Kathy Warden clarified that management expects growth to accelerate again in 2028, without committing to an 8% growth rate.

Northrop Raises Its 2026 Profit Outlook

Greene raised the midpoint of 2026 segment operating income guidance by $65 million to a range of $4.94-$5.04 billion. The company also lifted MTM-adjusted earnings guidance to $29.35-$29.75 per share while maintaining sales guidance of $43.75 billion-$44.25 billion.

Quarterly earnings of $7.89 per share exceeded the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $7.22. Revenues of $11.12 billion also topped the $11.06 billion consensus mark.

Greene attributed the stronger profit outlook to operating execution and tax benefits, partly offset by higher corporate costs and interest expense. Segment margin reached 12.1% despite a difficult prior-year comparison at Mission Systems.

NOC Backlog Adds Visibility but Timing Matters

Warden highlighted $16.4 billion in quarterly net awards and a record $109.6 billion backlog. The quarter's book-to-bill ratio reached 1.5, supported by restricted contracts, Sentinel and submarine-related awards.

During questions from Jefferies, Warden identified international contracting, weapons production and restricted space as additional growth opportunities. However, award timing, appropriations and the continuing resolution could affect the 2027 growth trajectory.

She told Goldman Sachs that management expects about 35% of backlog to convert over the next 12 months and another 55% over the following 24 months, supporting its multiyear planning horizon.

Northrop Addresses B-21 Execution Risk

A Bank of America analyst questioned the potential for another charge on B-21's fixed-price initial production contracts. Warden emphasized progress through flight testing and production learning, while acknowledging continuing risk.

She said capacity investments would extend through 2028 before translating into higher aircraft production volumes later in the decade. Sustainment and modernization also contribute to the program's sales opportunity.

Greene cautioned that a growing B-21 sales mix could pressure Aeronautics margins. He similarly identified Sentinel's mix effects in Defense Systems, even as execution and international business provide offsets.

NOC Balances Capital Spending With Cash Flow

Greene projected approximately $2.1 billion of capital expenditures in 2027, supporting increased B-21 capacity. Nevertheless, management retained its 2027 adjusted free cash flow outlook of $3.3 billion to $3.7 billion.

He pointed to sales growth, operating performance, working capital discipline and tax optimization as offsets to higher investment requirements.

For 2026, adjusted free cash flow guidance remained $3.1 billion to $3.5 billion. Greene expects fourth-quarter capital spending to approach $1 billion as investment accelerates.

Northrop Explores New Technology Markets

Warden discussed FORTITUDE microelectronics technology and quantum computing as potential bridges into commercial markets, alongside defense applications.

When Deutsche Bank asked whether the foundry business could be sold or separated, Warden said options also included retaining operations or broadening their investor base. No specific investment amount was established.

She also described Talon Blue's autonomous-flight progress and Raid Hunter's counter-drone applications as evidence of product development aligned with customer demand.

NOC Focuses on Execution Through Ramp-Up

Management's tone combined confidence in backlog-backed growth with caution about production timing, budget appropriations and development-program risk.

Warden and Greene emphasized disciplined execution as the company invests in capacity and shifts gradually toward more production-oriented work.
