Excluding foreign exchange and acquisitions, organic revenue increased $104.7 million; organic revenue is a company-defined non-GAAP measure. Product revenue was $567.1 million and service revenue was $115.5 million.
Management attributed gross-margin improvement to favorable mix, pricing, volume leverage and foreign exchange, partly offset by supply-chain, logistics and inflationary pressures. Non-GAAP gross margin was 53.4%, up from 52.7%; non-GAAP operating margin was 20.3%, up from 19.5%.

Cash, debt and liquidity
- Cash and cash equivalents were $597.9 million at March 31, 2023, down from $645.5 million at year-end 2022. Cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash ended the quarter at $601.4 million.
- Total debt, including finance leases, was $1,229.1 million, versus $1,219.2 million at December 31, 2022. The current portion rose to $120.1 million from $18.7 million; long-term debt, less current portion, was $1,109.0 million.
- The company had $599.7 million available under its $600.0 million revolving credit agreement, with no borrowings outstanding. It reported compliance with debt covenants and no off-balance-sheet arrangements.
- Operating cash flow was partly offset by inventory investment: inventory rose to $858.8 million from $800.1 million. Investing cash outflow was $108.2 million, including $88.1 million for acquisitions and $25.0 million for capital expenditures. Financing cash outflow was $30.7 million, including $22.4 million of share repurchases and $7.4 million of dividends.
Management expects existing cash and credit facilities to support operating and investing needs for at least the next 12 months. Cash and short-term investments held outside the United States totaled $523.6 million.
Changes, outlook and risks
- Interest and other expense, net, increased to $16.1 million from $2.5 million of expense, mainly due to a $6.9 million impairment of minority investments and higher foreign-currency transaction losses. The company also reported $2.7 million of cumulative currency-translation loss related to substantially liquidating its Russian operations.
- The effective tax rate declined to 28.0% from 33.9%, primarily reflecting a larger foreign-tax-credit benefit under U.S. tax rules effective in late 2022 and discrete tax impacts in Q1 2022.
- Q1 acquisitions included 97.15% of Biognosys, for which reported cash consideration was $73.6 million before acquired cash, plus other acquisitions. On May 4, 2023, after quarter-end, Bruker acquired 60% of OSTHUS Beteiligungs GmbH, with potential additional consideration of up to $14.4 million.
- Management identified continuing risks from component and raw-material shortages, longer lead times, inflation, higher energy and transportation costs, geopolitical tensions and trade restrictions, customer spending changes, foreign-exchange and interest-rate movements, and possible recession. It noted that these factors can disrupt production, delay revenue and raise costs.
- The filing provides no specific numerical full-year revenue or earnings guidance. Management commentary emphasizes sustained demand, continued investment in production capacity and R&D, and persistent supply-chain and cost challenges.
- Uninsured cash and investments at banking institutions exceed U.S. federal deposit-insurance limits; the company said it monitors counterparties and market developments. A European patent-office proceeding related to a Luxendo product remained pending, with a hearing scheduled for Q2 2023. The company said ordinary-course litigation was not expected to have a material financial impact and had recorded no material contingency accruals.

- Acquisition costs, integration progress and the economics of Biognosys and the post-quarter OSTHUS transaction, including any contingent or redeemable noncontrolling interests.
- Potential effects of uninsured bank deposits, foreign-exchange exposure, the pending EPO matter and other legal or regulatory proceedings.
