Revenue rose 43%, primarily on higher unit volume: approximately 976,000 microinverters sold versus 611,000. Gross margin expanded 7.1 percentage points, with management citing the lower-cost IQ 7 product family and pricing management. IQ 7 products represented 94% of microinverter sales, versus 8% a year earlier. Expedited freight partly offset product-cost improvements.
Operating expenses were $26.2 million, up from $20.8 million. General and administrative expense rose 42%, including higher personnel costs and consulting and advisory fees related to the company’s first year of SOX auditor-attestation requirements. Restructuring charges were $0.4 million. Interest expense and other expense totaled $4.0 million, including costs associated with repaying the term loans and foreign-exchange effects.
Balance sheet, debt and liquidity
At March 31, 2019, cash and cash equivalents were $78.1 million, down from $106.2 million at year-end; working capital was $66.7 million. Current assets were $195.4 million and current liabilities were $128.7 million. Total liabilities were $305.1 million and stockholders’ equity was $14.1 million.
Debt carrying value was $68.4 million, down from $109.8 million at December 31, 2018. Enphase repaid the remaining approximately $39.5 million principal on its term loans on January 28, plus accrued interest and fees. Remaining debt included $65.0 million principal of 4.0% convertible notes due in 2023 and financing-receivable debt. The company stated that cash and expected operating cash flows should cover anticipated needs for at least the next 12 months.
Operating cash flow benefited from earnings, noncash charges and working-capital movements, including higher accounts payable and lower inventory; increased receivables partly offset these sources. Financing cash outflow primarily reflected the term-loan repayment. Cash decreased by $28.2 million during the quarter.
Outlook, developments and risks
- Enphase anticipated a phased introduction of its Ensemble grid-agnostic energy system beginning in Q4 2019. It reported limited Q1 shipments of IQ 7A microinverters and said IQ 7AS shipments to SunPower had recently begun.
- The filing provides no quantitative revenue, margin or earnings guidance. Management’s 12-month liquidity assessment is based on existing cash and expected operating cash flows.
- SunPower held 7.5 million Enphase shares and was a customer under a five-year exclusive supply arrangement, subject to renewal options. Q1 revenue under the arrangement was $4.5 million, net of customer-relationship intangible amortization.
- Warranty obligations totaled $31.0 million, including $12.1 million measured using significant unobservable inputs. Management identifies estimates involving revenue recognition, inventory valuation and warranty obligations as significant; actual outcomes may differ.
- The company said there were no material changes to the risk factors in its 2018 Form 10-K, no material legal proceedings, and no off-balance-sheet arrangements. It reported effective disclosure controls and no material change in internal control during the quarter.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Whether volume growth and the shift toward IQ 7 products sustain gross-margin improvement, and how freight and supply-chain costs evolve.
- Progress, timing and commercial adoption of Ensemble and other announced product launches; the filing gives no quantified forward guidance.
- Cash generation after the term-loan repayment and the company’s ability to meet liquidity needs using cash and operating flows.
- Execution and revenue contribution of the SunPower agreement, including the related-party relationship and customer concentration.
- Warranty claims and estimate changes, restructuring completion, and the effect of stock-based compensation and convertible-note dilution.
