Quarterly sales growth was 2% on a constant-currency basis; six-month growth was 24%. Higher promotional activity, excess-inventory reserves and logistics costs pressured gross margin. Marketing and selling expense rose substantially as Logitech invested in advertising, brand awareness and headcount; research and development costs also increased.
Product and regional trends
- Quarterly growth was strongest in Keyboards & Combos (up 17%), Pointing Devices (up 12%) and Gaming (up 11%). Video Collaboration declined 2%; PC Webcams declined 8%; Audio & Wearables declined 14%; Smart Home declined 34%.
- For the six-month period, Gaming rose 39%, Keyboards & Combos 31%, Pointing Devices 28% and Video Collaboration 27%. Mobile Speakers and Smart Home declined 6% and 23%, respectively.
- Quarterly regional sales were flat in the Americas, up 3% in EMEA and up 12% in Asia Pacific. Six-month sales increased 28%, 26% and 28%, respectively.
Cash flow, liquidity and capital
- Cash and cash equivalents were $1,137.3 million at September 30, 2021, down from $1,750.3 million at March 31, 2021. Working capital was $1,489.2 million.
- Six-month operating cash flow was negative $177.8 million, compared with positive $398.5 million a year earlier. The company attributed the outflow primarily to tax and bonus payment timing, higher inventory, lower accounts payable and timing of sales.
- Investing cash outflow was $63.2 million, including $47.2 million of capital expenditures and $15.6 million for an acquisition. Financing cash outflow was $371.9 million, including $174.4 million in share repurchases and $159.4 million in dividends.
- Logitech reported no borrowings under its $191.8 million of uncommitted, unsecured bank lines. It had $11.9 million of bank guarantees under those lines. The filing states that management believes available cash and projected cash generation are sufficient for at least the next 12 months.
- Inventory was $827.7 million, up from $661.1 million at March 31, 2021 and $394.7 million at September 30, 2020. Inventory turnover was 3.7 times versus 7.0 times a year earlier.
- The expanded $1.0 billion share repurchase authorization had $661.0 million remaining at September 30, 2021. The company paid a dividend of $0.95 per share during the six-month period.
Outlook, risks and unusual items
- The filing gives no numerical revenue or earnings guidance. Management highlights continued opportunity in remote and hybrid work, gaming, video collaboration, streaming and PC peripherals, while cautioning that pandemic-driven demand may not persist.
- COVID-19-related supply-chain constraints, component availability, transportation delays and higher logistics and component costs remained significant concerns. Management also warned that demand volatility could result in excess inventory, increased promotions or lost sales.
- Inventory purchase commitments totaled $812.8 million, most expected to be fulfilled within 12 months. A $22.2 million liability was recorded for purchase commitments exceeding anticipated demand or net realizable value. Capital expenditure purchase commitments were $23.5 million.
- Foreign exchange is a material exposure: about half of quarterly sales were denominated in currencies other than the U.S. dollar. A hypothetical adverse 10% currency move would have reduced pre-tax income by approximately $25.5 million at September 30, after considering existing forward contracts.
- Unrecognized tax benefits were $170.2 million, up from $160.3 million at March 31, 2021. The filing says these positions could change as audits, tax-law developments and other matters progress.
- Logitech reported several ordinary-course claims and a small number of legal proceedings; it did not expect their resolution to materially affect financial position, cash flows or results, while noting litigation uncertainty. No amounts were accrued for supplier and customer indemnifications.
- Other notable items included a $6.7 million quarterly net other expense, primarily reflecting currency losses, and a May 2021 technology acquisition described as immaterial, with up to $10 million of contingent milestone payments.
Most important facts for investors to verify
- Whether revenue growth and demand in key categories remain durable after pandemic-related comparisons, particularly given the quarter’s modest 4% sales growth.
- Whether gross-margin pressure from logistics costs, promotions and inventory reserves persists, and whether increased marketing and R&D spending produces profitable growth.
- Whether inventory levels, turnover and supply-chain commitments normalize without material markdowns, excess stock or fulfillment constraints.
- Whether operating cash flow recovers from the six-month outflow and how repurchases and dividends affect cash balances and liquidity.
- Developments in uncertain tax positions, currency exposure, supply concentration, major customer relationships and pending legal matters.
