Financial performance and liquidity
| Metric | Q1 2024 | Q1 2023 / change |
|---|---|---|
| Net sales | $1.899 billion | $1.699 billion; up 11.8% |
| Gross profit / margin | $1.027 billion / 54.1% | $897.8 million / 52.8% |

| Capital expenditures | $66.0 million | $40.1 million |
- Gross margin improved 1.3 percentage points, primarily from lower freight-in and input costs and pricing actions, partly offset by geographic mix. Operating expenses rose 17.5%, faster than sales, including higher selling and marketing, payroll and distribution costs.
- Energy drink case sales increased 15.9% to 211.4 million, while average net sales per energy-drink case fell 3.8% to $8.69.
- Q1 segment sales: Monster Energy Drinks $1.729 billion; Strategic Brands $108.4 million; Alcohol Brands $56.1 million; Other $5.5 million. Alcohol Brands remained loss-making at a $6.0 million operating loss.
- At March 31, cash and cash equivalents were $2.577 billion, short-term investments $984.2 million and long-term investments $8.2 million. Current assets were $6.036 billion versus current liabilities of $1.229 billion.
- No amount was outstanding on the $15 million credit line. The filing reports lease liabilities of $61.9 million in total; it does not present a material conventional borrowing balance.
- Financing activities used $84.7 million, including $120.2 million of treasury-stock purchases, partly offset by $38.4 million from stock issuance. Cash increased by $278.8 million during the quarter.
Changes, outlook and notable items
- Sales growth reflected higher worldwide energy-drink volumes and prior pricing actions. Foreign exchange reduced reported sales by about $64.4 million, including $50.4 million from Argentina. Sales outside the U.S. rose 19.5% reported and 29.8% on a foreign-currency-adjusted basis (21.7% excluding Argentina’s impact).
- The effective tax rate increased to 23.5% from 20.1%, primarily because the stock-based compensation deduction was lower. Interest and other income rose to $35.8 million, including higher interest income.
- Management expects capital expenditures, excluding share repurchases, to be below $500 million through March 31, 2025, and believes available cash, operations and credit access will meet needs for at least the next 12 months. The company anticipates U.S. price increases on certain Monster Energy drinks in Q4 2024; amounts were not yet determined. Results are seasonal and interim performance may not indicate full-year results.
- On May 1, 2024, the board authorized a planned modified Dutch-auction tender offer for up to $3.0 billion of shares. The company expected to launch it in May, funding it with approximately $2.0 billion of cash and $1.0 billion of new revolving and delayed-draw term borrowings. Offer terms and completion remained subject to subsequent materials and conditions.
- As of March 31, purchase commitments were approximately $345.5 million and sponsorship/marketing contractual obligations approximately $451.1 million. Management said pending litigation was not expected, in aggregate, to materially adversely affect financial position or results; recorded loss contingencies were $0.3 million.
- Key risks include currency movements, inflation and input costs, customer and distributor concentration, dependence on the Coca-Cola distribution relationship, competition, regulation and litigation, and execution of Bang Energy integration and Alcohol Brands profitability. Coca-Cola Europacific Partners accounted for 14% of sales; Coca-Cola Consolidated for 10%; and Reyes Holdings for 9%.

- Progress toward Alcohol Brands profitability and the performance of the newly launched Nasty Beast Hard Tea.
- Customer and bottler concentration, commitments, and exposure to commodity, supply-chain, regulatory and litigation risks.
