Higher interest expense, average borrowings, incentive fees and management fees contributed to expense growth. Aggregate net investment income increased, but net investment income per share declined.

Outlook, risks and unusual items
- Management cited inflation, elevated interest rates, possible slower economic activity and geopolitical conflict as sources of market uncertainty. It said it is monitoring effects on portfolio companies and believes liquidity and capital resources are sufficient to pursue investment opportunities. No numerical earnings or distribution outlook was provided.
- The Board declared a $0.55-per-share quarterly distribution payable March 29, 2024. The quarter’s distributions were $0.62 per share, including a $0.07 special distribution, compared with $0.96 per share in the prior-year quarter. Quarter distributions exceeded reported net investment income per share.
- Credit facilities totaled $710.0 million outstanding, with $907.5 million of reported undrawn capacity subject to borrowing-base and other limitations. Unfunded commitments were $226.6 million, including $165.9 million available for immediate draw, with the remainder subject to conditions.
- The $300 million 2025 Notes mature February 25, 2025. Total principal debt also includes $350 million of 2027 Notes and $300 million of 2029 Notes. The company reported compliance with its financial covenants.
- Fair value estimates involve judgment: $2.726 billion of investments were Level 3, using significant unobservable inputs. Management cautioned that estimated values may differ materially from eventual realizations.
- Annualized net investment income as a percentage of average net assets was 11.50%, compared with 12.40%; the annualized net expense ratio was 14.00%, compared with 12.87%. - Net realized losses were $8.5 million, including losses associated with Continental Intermodal, P&L Development, Zephyr Bidco and Lift Brands. Net unrealized depreciation was $25.0 million. Management reported no material legal proceedings, no defaults on senior securities, and no material changes to previously disclosed risk factors.
Important facts for investors to verify

- How portfolio valuations—particularly Level 3 marks and equity holdings—compare with subsequent recoveries or transactions.
- Whether net investment income and cash generation can support distributions, debt service and unfunded commitments.
- Availability and cost of the reported undrawn credit capacity, and refinancing plans for the 2025 Notes.
- The effect of interest-rate changes on both floating-rate portfolio income and floating-rate funding costs.
