Material changes and management commentary
- Lower asset yields, competitive pricing and a larger low-yield overnight cash position compressed margin; reduced deposit costs only partly offset the pressure. Average loans grew 8.9% year over year in Q2, while average deposits grew 6.2%.
- Trust department income increased 11% in Q2 to $3.63 million. Trust assets under administration were approximately $2.52 billion, up from $2.06 billion a year earlier.
- Nonperforming assets declined to $11.4 million from $15.2 million at year-end 2012; nonaccrual loans fell to $8.1 million from $11.7 million. The allowance for loan losses was $13.4 million, or 1.07% of loans, versus $12.7 million, or 1.12%, at year-end.
- Available-for-sale securities generated a $3.35 million after-tax reduction in accumulated other comprehensive income during the first half, largely reflecting market-value declines. Management considered the unrealized losses temporary and reported no other-than-temporary impairment charge. A single-issuer trust preferred security was rated Ba1 and had a $0.61 million unrealized loss; management said it monitored the issuer.
Outlook, risks and unusual items
- Management expected elevated operating expenses to continue as it implemented its strategic plan and said related revenue and profitability could lag expenses by several quarters. No numerical earnings or revenue guidance was provided.
- The $0.93 million OREO provision related to one property and reduced Q2 after-tax earnings by approximately $0.60 million, or about $0.07 per diluted share. The filing also reported a $0.52 million first-quarter gain from selling classified loans transferred to held-for-sale at year-end 2012.
- Key stated risks include New Jersey economic and real-estate conditions, net interest margin pressure and rate changes, credit losses and nonperforming loans, execution and cost risks tied to the strategic plan, liquidity and funding, regulatory changes, cybersecurity, and litigation or fiduciary claims.
- Management reported effective disclosure controls and no material change in internal control over financial reporting during the quarter. The Bank met the filing’s well-capitalized standards; management was evaluating the impact of Basel III rules being phased in beginning in 2015.
