INSULET CORP quarterly report, Q1 FY2024

Insulet Corporation — Q1 2024 Form 10-Q

Reporting period: Three months ended March 31, 2024; unaudited. Insulet develops and sells the Omnipod insulin-delivery platform, with additional drug-delivery revenue. Comparisons below are with Q1 2023 unless otherwise noted.

Financial performance

MetricQ1 2024Q1 2023
Total revenue$441.7 million$358.1 million
Gross profit / gross margin$306.8 million / 69.5%$240.5 million / 67.2%
Operating income$56.9 million$27.7 million
Net income$51.5 million$23.8 million
Diluted EPS$0.73$0.34
Cash from operations$87.6 million$0.5 million
Capital expenditures$22.1 million$10.5 million
  • Revenue increased 23.3% reported and 22.8% at constant currency. Omnipod revenue was $433.0 million: U.S. $317.7 million, up 22.7%; international $115.3 million, up 16.9% reported and 14.8% excluding currency impact. Drug Delivery revenue was $8.7 million, versus $0.5 million.
  • Gross margin rose 230 basis points, primarily on higher selling prices and manufacturing efficiencies. The comparison was affected by an $8.0 million warranty-accrual reduction recorded in Q1 2023, which did not recur.
  • SG&A increased 22.7% to $199.7 million, reflecting staffing and commercial/international growth costs, among other items. R&D was nearly unchanged at $50.2 million.
  • Cash and cash equivalents were $751.2 million at March 31, 2024, versus $704.2 million at year-end 2023. Net cash increased $47.0 million during the quarter. The operating-cash-flow improvement reflected earnings and working-capital movements, including timing of payables and receivables, partly offset by inventory growth and lower accrued liabilities.
  • Total debt, net, was $1.402 billion, including $38.9 million current and $1.363 billion long-term. The company had no revolving-credit-facility borrowings and reported a 64% debt-to-total-capital ratio and 30% net-debt-to-total-capital ratio.

Material changes and business developments

  • Growth was principally driven by higher Omnipod volume. U.S. pharmacy-channel growth and international Omnipod 5 launches in the U.K. and Germany contributed; U.S. growth also reflected a higher average selling price.
  • Management cited lower U.S. distributor inventory days and fewer conversions to Omnipod 5 as offsets. International markets without Omnipod 5 faced higher customer attrition amid competition.
  • SG&A growth outpaced revenue, while operating income and net income more than doubled year over year. Adjusted EBITDA, a non-GAAP measure, was $89.2 million versus $48.8 million; Q1 2023 included an $8.0 million benefit from the warranty estimate revision.
  • In January 2024, the term loan was amended to SOFR plus 3.00%, with a 0% SOFR floor; revolving-facility pricing was also amended.

Outlook, risks, and contingencies

  • For full-year 2024, management expects strong U.S. revenue growth and higher international Omnipod revenue, while noting offsets from distributor inventory reductions, fewer U.S. conversions, and attrition in markets without Omnipod 5. Drug Delivery revenue is expected to decline $18 million to $22 million, based on the partner’s lower forecast and a lower selling price.
  • Management expects 2024 gross margin of 68%–69%, with higher selling prices and manufacturing efficiencies offset by the nonrecurrence of $11.5 million of 2023 warranty-accrual income and higher new-product-launch costs. R&D, SG&A, and capital spending are expected to increase year over year.
  • Management believes available liquidity is sufficient for at least the next 12 months. It expects increased capital spending, including for the Malaysia manufacturing facility, to be funded with existing cash. Malaysia production of salable product is expected to begin in 2024; management expects the facility to add capacity and support margin improvement over time.
  • Product and market plans include a type 2 Omnipod 5 FDA submission expected by year-end 2024, following completion of the pivotal trial; limited market releases of Omnipod 5 with Dexcom G7 in the U.S. and Libre 2 Plus in the U.K. and Netherlands; and a planned U.S. iPhone app limited release in 2024. These are forward-looking plans, not assured outcomes.
  • Supply-chain disruption and inflation continue to pressure costs and margins; inventory was $430.6 million, up from $402.6 million at year-end, partly reflecting a planned build. Other disclosed risks include competition, reimbursement and regulatory exposure, dependence on suppliers and manufacturing locations, product safety/liability, cybersecurity, and execution of international expansion.
  • Disclosure controls were deemed ineffective at March 31, 2024 because of an unresolved material weakness in IT general controls for systems supporting financial reporting outside North America. Remediation steps were taken, but the weakness is not considered remediated until tested and confirmed effective.
  • A full valuation allowance remains against U.S. and U.K. net deferred tax assets. Management said a release of approximately $200 million could become supportable during 2024 if sufficient positive evidence emerges; timing and recognition are uncertain. The company also continues to assess the potential impact of global minimum-tax rules.
  • Letters of credit outstanding were $19.8 million, primarily supporting guarantees for the Malaysia manufacturing building. The company reported routine legal proceedings and does not expect them, individually or in aggregate, to have a material adverse effect.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether Omnipod 5 customer growth, international launches, and planned type 2 expansion meet management’s expectations, including required regulatory and reimbursement milestones.
  • Whether the Malaysia facility starts salable production on schedule and delivers the anticipated capacity and margin benefits.
  • How gross margin develops against the 68%–69% full-year outlook, particularly as warranty benefits lapse and launch, inflation, and supply-chain costs evolve.
  • Whether the IT-control material weakness is remediated and validated, and whether the possible deferred-tax valuation-allowance release is ultimately supported and recorded.
  • Customer and distributor concentration: three distributors each represented at least 10% of Q1 revenue; together they accounted for 78% of revenue. Review related-party revenue, which was $111.8 million, and the company’s $800 million convertible notes due September 2026.
