Non-GAAP operating income was $358.8 million, up 17%, and non-GAAP operating ROE was 14.4%, versus 12.4%; the company’s operating ROE target is 12%. The combined ratio remained below 100%, indicating an underwriting profit overall, but underwriting income fell 20% to $132.8 million. After-tax net investment income rose 33% to $309.5 million, supported by higher fixed-income yields. Net realized and unrealized investment losses narrowed to $3.6 million from $114.8 million, contributing to GAAP earnings growth.

At year-end, total assets were $11.80 billion, stockholders’ equity $2.95 billion, and statutory surplus $2.74 billion. Total debt was approximately $504 million, with a 14.6% debt-to-capital ratio and a 5.5% weighted-average effective interest rate. The investment portfolio totaled $8.69 billion; fixed-income and short-term investments were 92% of invested assets, with an AA- weighted-average credit rating. After-tax unrealized investment losses in accumulated other comprehensive income were $275.8 million, improved from $421.3 million in 2022. Book value per common share increased 18% to $45.42.

Cash and restricted cash were $13.3 million on the consolidated balance sheet. The parent separately reported $508.0 million of investments and cash available for dividends and interest payments. Material changes versus 2022

  • NPW grew 16%, with higher renewal pricing, direct new business, retention, and renewal exposure growth. NPW exceeded $4 billion for the first time.
  • The consolidated combined ratio worsened 1.4 points, principally reflecting higher catastrophe losses and a marked reduction in favorable prior-year reserve development. Net catastrophe losses increased $98.6 million; prior-year reserve development shifted from $78.9 million favorable to $10.0 million unfavorable.
  • Standard Personal Lines deteriorated sharply: its combined ratio increased to 121.7% from 102.4%, and its underwriting loss widened to $79.3 million from $7.2 million. Drivers included catastrophe and non-catastrophe property losses, higher auto severity and frequency, and unfavorable prior-year development.
  • Standard Commercial Lines produced $157.3 million of underwriting income, up from $143.7 million, with a 94.9% combined ratio. E&S underwriting income increased to $54.8 million from $30.3 million, and its combined ratio improved to 86.0%.
  • Operating cash flow declined, mainly because of higher claim payments, partly offset by increased premium cash receipts. Invested assets rose 11% to $8.69 billion, while the portfolio’s unrealized losses narrowed.

Outlook, risks, and unusual items

For 2024, management guided to a 95.5% GAAP combined ratio, including 5.0 catastrophe-loss points and assuming no prior-year casualty reserve development; $360 million of after-tax net investment income, including $32 million from alternative investments; an approximately 21% effective tax rate; and 61.5 million fully diluted weighted-average shares, assuming no share repurchases. Management expects 2024 ROE to exceed its 12% target. Personal Lines renewal written rate increases are expected to be approximately 20%–25%, subject to regulatory approval. These are management estimates, not guarantees.

Key uncertainties include catastrophe frequency and severity, inflation in claim costs, social inflation and litigation trends, reserve adequacy, reinsurance pricing and availability, and reinsurance counterparty risk. General liability had $55 million of unfavorable prior-year development in 2023, attributed primarily to social-inflation severity in accident years 2015–2020; workers compensation had $74.5 million favorable development, mainly reflecting improved prior-year severities. Management estimated a reasonable range for net loss reserves of $4.253 billion to $5.004 billion, compared with recorded net reserves of $4.718 billion. The external auditor identified reserve estimation as a critical audit matter. The company also disclosed uncertainty around abuse-related claims and “reviver” statutes.

The 2024 catastrophe reinsurance program provides $1.1 billion of coverage above a $100 million retention, with increased limits and retention versus the expiring program; management expects catastrophe reinsurance premiums to rise considerably. Management estimates the program limits the net after-tax impact of a 1-in-250-year hurricane event to about 4% of GAAP equity. The 2024 TRIPRA deductible is approximately $543 million before tax; federal participation applies above the deductible for certified events, subject to program terms.

Other notable disclosures: the common dividend was increased 17% to $0.35 per quarter; no common shares were repurchased under the authorization in 2023. The financial statements received an unqualified audit opinion, and management and the auditor concluded internal control over financial reporting was effective. The filing reports no material pending legal proceeding expected to materially affect consolidated financial condition, results, or cash flows.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether Personal Lines rate actions and policy changes improve underwriting results, and how quickly the segment moves toward a combined ratio below 100%.
  • Whether general liability severity, social inflation, and abuse-related claims lead to further reserve strengthening; monitor actual development against the disclosed reserve range.
  • Actual catastrophe losses and the cost, terms, and collectability of reinsurance, including the catastrophe bond and the TRIPRA deductible exposure.
  • Whether investment income meets the $360 million 2024 guidance and how interest rates, credit spreads, alternative-investment returns, and unrealized losses affect results and equity.
  • The effect of regulated subsidiary dividend capacity and parent liquidity on debt service, dividends, and capital flexibility.
  • Progress against 2024 combined-ratio guidance, including catastrophe losses and prior-year reserve development, which the guidance assumes is zero.
