Net cash from operating activities—$44.6 million$91.7 million

Sales rose about 14% in Q3 and 18% in the first nine months. Growth reflected expansion of the installed customer base and higher pump-related supply sales; management reported Q3 supply sales up 25% and pump sales up 5% after the Tandem Choice deferral. Q3 U.S. pump shipments were 20,394, essentially flat year over year; international pump shipments increased 8%.

Profitability deteriorated despite higher sales. Gross margin fell 3 percentage points in Q3 and 2 points year to date, chiefly from supply-chain-related material and freight costs and a lower share of higher-margin pump sales. Operating expenses increased substantially, including a $31.0 million acquired in-process R&D charge related to Capillary Biomedical. SG&A and R&D also rose with employee-related and other operating costs. Stock-based compensation was $60.5 million for the nine months.

Balance sheet, liquidity and debt

  • At September 30, cash and cash equivalents were $123.8 million and short-term investments were $484.9 million, totaling $608.7 million. Current assets were $834.3 million versus current liabilities of $173.6 million.
  • Operating cash flow was $44.6 million for the first nine months, down from $91.7 million a year earlier. Inventory increased to $104.8 million from $68.6 million at year-end 2021.
  • Convertible senior notes had $287.5 million principal outstanding, due May 2025, with a 1.50% coupon; net carrying value was $282.8 million. The company had no revolver borrowings and $95.1 million of availability under its $100 million revolving credit facility after letters of credit.
  • Total liabilities were $625.7 million. Operating lease liabilities totaled $139.2 million; the long-term facility lease schedule includes substantial payments through 2035.
  • Accumulated deficit was $713.3 million. Management said cash, investments, revolver availability and expected operating cash flows should fund ongoing core business activities.

Material developments, outlook and risks

  • Capillary Biomedical: Acquired in July for $24.7 million cash consideration and assumption of $4.7 million long-term debt. Its extended-wear infusion set remains in development; the asset acquisition generated the $31.0 million Q3 charge.
  • Tandem Choice: Launched in September, offering eligible U.S. customers a paid path to the next-generation pump when available. Tandem deferred $0.6 million of pump revenue in Q3; it said the program’s total financial impact could not yet be estimated.
  • Management outlook: No quantified revenue or earnings guidance is provided in the supplied filing text. Management anticipated continued gross-margin pressure from supply-chain and material costs through year-end 2022 and into 2023, and warned that sales and operating results may remain unpredictable. It expects operating expenses to rise as it invests in product development, commercial infrastructure and customer support.
  • Development plans: The filing discusses Mobi, t:slim X3, additional mobile-control capabilities, CGM integrations and expanded Control-IQ indications. These plans depend on development progress and regulatory clearances or approvals.
  • Key risks: Component shortages and reliance on limited suppliers; inflation, recession concerns and lingering COVID-19 disruption; competition and reimbursement changes; regulatory, clinical and product-liability risks; and dependence on third-party CGM and distribution partners. Management reported approximately two percentage points of gross-margin pressure from alternative material sourcing and higher freight costs.
  • Contingency: A consolidated California class action arising from a 2020 phishing incident remains pending. Motions for class certification and summary adjudication were fully briefed; the company said it could not estimate the outcome or potential loss. No material loss was considered probable and estimable for other proceedings.
  • Other items: Short-term investments had $4.5 million of gross unrealized losses, primarily attributed to higher interest rates; the company said it did not consider these credit losses and did not expect to need to sell the securities before recovery. Disclosure controls were assessed as effective at a reasonable-assurance level.

Most important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether supply-chain costs, freight and product mix keep gross margins near or below the reported 51%.
  • How operating expenses, the Capillary Biomedical investment and Tandem Choice affect the path to sustained profitability and revenue recognition.
  • Whether inventory growth converts into sales and cash generation; operating cash flow fell materially year over year.
  • Liquidity and refinancing or settlement plans for the $287.5 million notes due in 2025, including the revolver’s covenants and springing maturity terms.
  • Developments in the phishing-related litigation, product and regulatory matters, supplier constraints, and planned product launches and integrations.
