Capital expenditures increased mainly to support expansion of the nucleic acid solutions facility. Cash flow after capital expenditures was approximately $1.021 billion, versus $1.297 billion in FY2021.
Balance sheet, debt and capital allocation
At October 31, 2022, cash and cash equivalents were $1.053 billion, down from $1.484 billion; current assets were $3.778 billion and current liabilities were $1.861 billion. Short- and long-term debt totaled approximately $2.769 billion, including $600 million under a term loan, $2.133 billion in senior notes and $35 million of commercial paper. The company reported no borrowings under its $1.35 billion revolving credit facility and stated it was in compliance with debt covenants. Management believes available cash, operating cash generation and access to capital will meet liquidity needs for at least the next twelve months.
Agilent repurchased 8.4 million shares for $1.139 billion in FY2022 and paid $250 million in dividends. Approximately $438 million remained authorized under its share-repurchase program at year-end. The board declared a $0.225-per-share quarterly dividend after year-end.
Changes, outlook and risks
- Revenue increased 8%, following 18% growth in FY2021. FY2022 growth was broad-based, but foreign exchange reduced reported growth by about 4 percentage points.
- Gross margin improved by 0.5 percentage point and operating margin by 2.3 percentage points. Management attributed the operating improvement to sales volume, higher gross margin and lower commissions and variable pay, partly offset by wage and inflation pressures.
- Net income rose 4% and diluted EPS rose from $3.94 to $4.18. FY2022 other expense included a $67 million net loss on equity securities and a $9 million debt-extinguishment loss; FY2021 included a $98 million net gain on equity securities. These items affect year-over-year comparability.
- Management expects continued inflationary and logistics pressures, including longer lead times and limited supply sources, and described the FY2023 macroeconomic environment as increasingly uncertain. It remained optimistic about growth opportunities across key end markets and cited targeted pricing and sourcing strategies. No quantified FY2023 revenue or earnings guidance is provided in the supplied text; anticipated FY2023 capital expenditures were approximately $300 million.
- Key disclosed risks include supply-chain disruption and customer-site access, COVID-19-related interruptions (including the Shanghai shutdown), inflation, foreign exchange, weaker customer or government spending, competition and product-development execution, regulatory and privacy requirements, cybersecurity, and tax uncertainty. Russia operations were largely ceased in May 2022; related shutdown expense and Russian sales were described as immaterial.
- The company reported no pending legal matters it believed reasonably possible of having a material impact. The financial statements received an unmodified audit opinion; the auditor identified uncertain tax positions as a critical audit matter. Management and the auditor concluded internal control over financial reporting was effective.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Review the cash-conversion trend: receivables, inventory and operating cash flow weakened year over year despite higher revenue and earnings.
- Assess the sustainability of margins and FY2023 growth assumptions against inflation, logistics constraints, currency movements and macroeconomic uncertainty.
- Reconcile reported results with unusual items, especially equity-security fair-value changes, debt-extinguishment costs and acquisition-related expenses.
- Examine debt maturities, variable-rate term-loan exposure, cash availability across jurisdictions and the company’s planned capital returns.
- Review uncertain tax positions: the filing reports $144 million including interest and penalties, with potential changes from audits or statute expirations that management could not quantify.
