Gross margin fell mainly because the prior-year quarter benefited from more favorable sales mix and absorption. Lower gross margin was the primary driver of the operating-income decline. Interest expense was lower due to reduced average borrowings and higher interest income. Management reported an effective tax rate of 21.3%, versus 21.9% a year earlier.

Markets and segments

  • Commercial Aerospace sales rose 5.2% to $299.3 million, supported by Boeing 787 sales; other Commercial Aerospace sales declined 6.3%, reflecting softer business-jet sales.
  • Space & Defense sales rose 10.2% to $139.1 million, with strength in fixed-wing aircraft and classified programs.
  • Industrial sales fell 27.9% to $33.9 million, with declines across industrial submarkets.
  • Composite Materials sales were $379.5 million, up 0.3%; segment operating income decreased to $63.7 million from $73.2 million.
  • Engineered Products sales were $92.8 million, up 16.7%; segment operating income increased to $12.9 million from $12.0 million.

Liquidity, debt and capital allocation

Cash declined by $141.1 million during the quarter. Operating cash use improved year over year, but working capital still consumed $84.5 million. Investing cash use increased to $28.7 million, while financing cash use was $104.3 million, including $100.7 million of share repurchases and $12.6 million of dividends.

Total debt was $714.7 million, including $15.0 million drawn on the $750 million senior unsecured credit facility; $735.0 million remained available. The facility’s quarterly weighted-average interest rate was 8.6%. Hexcel said it was in compliance with its debt covenants. Its $300 million 4.7% senior notes mature in 2025, the next significant scheduled debt maturity; $400 million of 3.95% notes mature in 2027. Management expects to meet short-term liquidity needs through operating cash flow, cash on hand and the facility.

The company repurchased 1,397,755 shares for $100.7 million at an average $71.54 per share. Approximately $386.4 million remained authorized under the repurchase program at quarter-end. The board declared a $0.15-per-share quarterly dividend on April 22, 2024.

Outlook, risks and unusual items

The filing gives no specific quantified revenue, earnings or margin guidance for 2024. Management described the commercial aerospace recovery as continuing, supported by air-travel growth and higher aircraft build rates, while cautioning that supply-chain and logistics constraints, inflation, geopolitical issues and conflicts may pressure operations and results.

  • Management cited aircraft production and delivery rates, customer demand (particularly at Boeing and Airbus), sales mix, raw-material availability and cost, workforce needs, capacity expansion, and defense procurement as factors that could affect results. The filing says risk factors were not materially changed from the 2023 Form 10-K.
  • Legal and environmental matters include Lower Passaic River claims. A proposed $150 million settlement involving Hexcel and 83 other potentially responsible parties had been placed in escrow pending court approval; Hexcel said it could not estimate when or whether approval would occur. Hexcel’s recorded aggregate environmental accrual was $0.6 million at March 31, 2024. The company believes pending proceedings will not materially adversely affect its results, financial position or cash flows, but outcomes remain uncertain.
  • Q1 restructuring charges were $1.2 million, primarily severance; anticipated future cash payments were $1.9 million.
  • Other comprehensive loss was $14.9 million, including $10.4 million of currency-translation losses and $4.4 million of net unrealized losses on financial instruments.
  • The company sold its 50% interest in a Malaysian joint venture in December 2023; Q1 2023 results included $1.0 million of equity-method earnings from that investment.

Most important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether aircraft production rates and Boeing 787-related demand support aerospace growth, and whether softer business-jet and industrial demand persists.
  • Whether margins recover from 25.0% gross margin and 11.2% operating margin, given management’s comments on mix, absorption and cost pressures.
  • Whether working-capital use reverses and cash generation improves after Q1 operating cash outflow and substantial repurchases.
  • Remaining liquidity, facility borrowing costs and the company’s ability to manage the 2025 senior-note maturity.
  • Approval and allocation of Hexcel’s share in the proposed Passaic River settlement, and whether environmental liabilities could exceed the recorded accrual.
