Material changes versus 2022
- Operating expenses rose 3.7% to ₩25,167 billion, faster than revenue. Operating profit and net income consequently fell despite modest revenue growth.
- Utilities expense increased 47.9% to ₩545 billion, attributed to higher electricity prices and usage. Other expenses rose 38.9% to ₩1,902 billion, primarily reflecting higher interest costs and BC Card credit losses.
- Intangible-asset impairment rose to ₩236 billion from ₩31 billion, including goodwill impairments of ₩119 billion for Epsilon and ₩98 billion for HCN.
- Interest expense increased 21.3% to ₩356 billion. Finance income fell 29.6%, while finance costs decreased 24.2% to ₩569 billion.
- Operating cash flow rebounded from 2022, but borrowings increased and the debt-to-equity ratio rose. Cash used for property, equipment and investment properties was ₩3,693 billion; intangible-asset acquisitions were ₩479 billion.
- The satellite TV segment shifted from ₩20 billion operating income to a ₩70 billion operating loss, mainly due to higher programming costs. Real estate and “others” segment operating income also declined.
Outlook, risks and unusual items
- Outlook: KT expects 2024 capital expenditures for property, equipment, investment property and intangible assets to decrease slightly from 2023 on a standalone basis. Actual spending remains subject to market conditions, operating results and 5G network plans. The filing provides no specific earnings or revenue guidance.
- Network investment and competition: 5G expansion and upgrades, bandwidth fees and marketing remain significant spending needs. The government cancelled KT’s 28 GHz spectrum license for failure to meet license conditions. Stage X won a license auction in January 2024 and was expected to launch service in the first half of 2025, subject to regulatory requirements.
- Regulatory and pricing exposure: Korean authorities may influence rates, handset subsidies and competition. A government plan to repeal the Mobile Device Distribution Improvement Act remained subject to legislative action; related 2024 changes could increase subsidy competition and costs.
- Litigation and compliance: The company reported 177 lawsuits with aggregate claims of ₩167.8 billion at year-end and litigation provisions of ₩29.7 billion. Matters include 5G service-quality claims, a ₩13.9 billion competition fine under appeal, and a ₩86.2 billion VAT-related claim by credit card companies. The filing also describes pending investigations and litigation involving former executives. KT paid the SEC approximately US$6.3 million in 2022 under a settlement concerning FCPA books-and-records and internal-controls findings; its two-year reporting period ended in April 2024.
- Foreign exchange and liquidity: Most revenue is in won, while foreign-currency debt and imported equipment create exposure to won depreciation. KT uses derivatives to manage some currency and interest-rate risks. It states that it expects adequate working capital and access to financing, but identifies capital spending, operating cash flow, interest rates and market liquidity as factors that could affect funding.
- Shareholder returns: The board proposed a FY2023 dividend of ₩1,960 per share, subject to shareholder approval. The company repurchased shares during 2023 and retired 695,775 treasury shares in March 2024 following a further buyback decision.
- Audit and controls: Deloitte Anjin issued an unqualified opinion on the 2023 financial statements and an opinion that internal control over financial reporting was effective. Mobile-service and handset revenue was identified as a critical audit matter due to transaction volume and billing-system complexity.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Reconcile reported revenue figures: the filing reports ₩26,595 billion as operating revenue and other income, while revenue from contracts with customers was ₩26,063 billion; the standalone statement also shows other income separately.
- Review the drivers and possible recurrence of the 2023 goodwill impairments, higher utility costs, and BC Card credit losses.
- Assess the maturity profile and refinancing needs of ₩10,218 billion of borrowings, including the stated ₩3,059 billion due in 2024, alongside foreign-currency exposure and hedges.
- Track the outcomes and potential financial effects of the disclosed lawsuits, competition proceedings, regulatory changes and former-executive investigations.
- Confirm approval and payment of the proposed ₩1,960 dividend and monitor 2024 capex against management’s expectation of a slight standalone decrease.
