Gross and operating margins are calculated from reported figures. Management attributed improved earnings mainly to lower input costs and productivity gains, partly offset by unfavorable price and product mix and foreign exchange effects. The lower tax rate reflected the geographic mix of profits and losses and a prior-year tax-receivable write-off.

Segments

SegmentQ1 2024 salesQ1 2023 salesQ1 2024 operating income (loss)Q1 2023 operating income (loss)
Global Ceramic$1,044.8$1,059.3$48.8$63.3
Flooring NA$900.2$953.4$45.0$(2.0)
Flooring ROW$734.4$793.5$70.9$75.2

Global Ceramic and Flooring ROW sales were pressured by price and product mix. Flooring NA sales declined on lower legacy volume and price/mix, while operating results improved substantially with lower input costs and productivity. Flooring ROW results also reflected price/mix pressure, partly offset by lower costs, fewer restructuring and related costs, volume, and productivity.

Cash flow, balance sheet and liquidity

  • Operating cash flow was $183.7, versus $257.3 a year earlier. Capital expenditures were $86.8, versus $128.5; operating cash flow less capital expenditures was approximately $96.9 (calculated).
  • Investing cash outflow was $86.8, compared with $639.9 in Q1 2023, which included acquisitions and short-term investment activity. Financing cash outflow was $76.1, versus $451.0 of inflow in the prior-year quarter.
  • Cash and equivalents were $658.5 at March 30, 2024, including $433.4 in the U.S. and $225.1 abroad. Current assets were $5,721.7 and current liabilities $3,120.1 (current ratio approximately 1.83, calculated).
  • Total debt carrying value was $2,626.0, including $931.5 current and $1,694.5 long-term; cash less total debt implies net debt of approximately $1,967.5 (calculated). The company reported $1,036.4 of Senior Credit Facility availability after accounting for commercial paper and letters of credit.
  • Mohawk prepaid the $675.0 U.S. and €220.0 European term-loan balances in January and February 2024. At quarter-end, commercial paper outstanding was $532.0 in the U.S. and $380.9 in Europe.

Outlook, management commentary and risks

  • Management expects to invest approximately $500 in 2024, focused on capacity expansion and targeted cost-reduction and operational initiatives. It expects previously announced restructuring and productivity actions to generate about $150 in annual savings, at an estimated cost of about $215.
  • Management said cash, operating cash generation and available credit should meet capital expenditure, working-capital and debt-service needs for at least the next 12 months. It also noted possible additional debt financing depending on conditions.
  • No specific earnings or sales guidance was provided in the supplied filing text. Management believes demand could accelerate if interest rates decline, but described housing and remodeling conditions as soft, with high rates, inflation and constrained discretionary spending weighing on demand.
  • Risks include volatile energy and raw-material costs, competitive price pressure, supply-chain disruption, currency movements, and geopolitical developments, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict and possible Middle East escalation. Management cautioned that the timing and extent of impacts are uncertain.
  • Contingencies include PFC-related water claims and securities and derivative actions. The company says it is defending the claims and believes certain allegations are without merit; it cannot estimate losses beyond amounts accrued. It does not expect these matters to materially affect financial condition, but acknowledges possible material effects on results, cash flows or liquidity in a period.
  • The company reported no material change in risk factors, no off-balance-sheet arrangements, and effective disclosure controls. It made no share repurchases in the quarter; $229.2 remained authorized under its $500 share-repurchase program.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether sales and margins stabilize as price/mix pressure and soft housing and remodeling demand persist.
  • Whether anticipated restructuring savings materialize and are sufficient to offset pricing, volume, input-cost and foreign-exchange changes.
  • Cash conversion and working-capital movements, particularly receivables and the quarter’s lower operating cash flow.
  • Debt maturities, commercial-paper refinancing and facility availability, including the effect of interest rates on floating-rate borrowings.
  • Progress and spending against the approximately $500 2024 capital-investment plan, and any changes to the repurchase program.
  • Developments in PFC, securities, derivative and environmental matters, including any change in estimated exposure or accrued amounts.
