How Is lululemon athletica's Stock Performance Compared to Other Retail Stocks?

lululemon athletica inc. (LULU), headquartered in Vancouver, Canada, designs, distributes, and retails athletic apparel, footwear, and accessories under the lululemon brand for women and men. Valued at $12.2 billion by market cap, the company produces fitness pants, shorts, tops and jackets for yoga, dance, running, and general fitness.

Companies worth $10 billion or more are generally described as “large-cap stocks,” and LULU perfectly fits that description, with its market cap exceeding this mark, underscoring its size, influence, and dominance within the apparel retail industry. LULU's reputation for quality and innovation has built a loyal customer base, driving repeat purchases and positive word-of-mouth. Their consistent R&D investment leads to unique products that set them apart from competitors, allowing control over the customer experience and margins.

Shares of LULU plummeted 52% on a YTD basis and 39.8% over the past 52 weeks, considerably underperforming RTH’s YTD 2.9% gains and 1.1% returns over the last year.

To confirm the bearish trend, LULU has been trading below its 50-day moving average since late January, with slight fluctuations. The stock is trading below its 200-day moving average over the past year.

LULU underperformed on weak demand in the Americas and China, with leggings sales down 20% amid soft traffic, negative social chatter and inconsistent launches. Management is shifting inventory to better-selling silhouettes like Groove Wide-Leg, boosting marketing through community events and athlete partnerships, and cutting costs while revamping stores and e-commerce. With trends expected to persist, the company took a prudent H2 outlook as new CEO Heidi O’Neill reviews strategy to restore brand heat.

On Sep. 3, LULU reported its Q2 results, and its shares tumbled 17.4% in the following trading session. Its EPS declined 5.8% from the year-ago quarter to $2.92. The company’s revenue was $2.4 billion, missing Wall Street forecasts of $2.5 billion. The company expects full-year EPS to be $9.48 to $9.73, and revenue ranging from $10.4 billion to $10.5 billion.

In the competitive arena of athleisure, adidas AG (ADDYY) has taken the lead over LULU, with a 13.9% downtick on a YTD basis and 18.5% decline over the past 52 weeks.

Wall Street analysts are cautious on LULU’s prospects. The stock has a consensus “Hold” rating from the 32 analysts covering it, and the mean price target of $105.92 suggests a 6.2% potential upside from current price levels.
