How Is Monolithic Power Systems' Stock Performance Compared to Other Semiconductor Stocks

West Palm Beach, Florida-based Monolithic Power Systems, Inc. (MPWR) provides semiconductor-based power electronics solutions in the United States and internationally. The company has a market cap of $58.3 billion and offers direct current (DC) to DC solutions to convert and control voltages within a range of electronic systems, including cloud-based and on-premises CPU servers and workstations, AI systems, memory, storage solutions, and more.

Companies with a market cap of $10 billion or more are typically called “large-cap stocks.” MPWR fits squarely into that category, with a market cap above this threshold that reflects its substantial size and influence in the semiconductor industry.

However, the stock currently trades 29.7% below its 52-week high of $1714.09 recorded on May 26. MPWR has fallen 20.9% over the past three months, underperforming the State Street SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF’s (XSD17.3% decline during the same time frame.

In the longer term, MPWR has delivered a similar performance. The stock has grown 43.4% over the past 52 weeks, lagging behind the 64.9% surge of XSD over the same period. MPWR has been trading below its 200-day moving average since this month and also below its 50-day moving average since August, indicating short-term bearish momentum.

On Sept. 1, MPWR stock declined 3.3% after crude oil prices surged, accompanied by a jump in benchmark Treasury yields. The rising prices brought up concerns over inflation and prolonged corporate borrowing costs. Following several U.S. military strikes in Iran, and news of new strikes also being on the horizon, the 10-year Treasury yield climbed to about 4.79%, marking a 20-month high. Geopolitical tension leading to higher energy and logistics costs ultimately led to concern over tightening margins across global chip supply chains.

When stacked against its rival, Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) has surged 47.4% over the past year, outpacing MPWR.

Wall Street has a highly bullish view of the stock currently. Among the 14 analysts tracking MPWR, the overall consensus stands at a “Strong Buy.” Its mean price target of $1,830.83 suggests a 54.4% upside potential from current price levels.
