Micron Says It Will Invest in U.S. Critical Mineral Processing. That Supports the MU Stock Growth Story.

Micron Technology (MU) is investing to secure materials in a move targeting chip manufacturing. Specifically, the firm recently announced its investment in Indium Corporation to support the expansion of critical-mineral processing and high-purity materials manufacturing at Indium's facility in Rome, New York.

While the move targets a particular processing facility, it also provides a necessary boost to the semiconductor company, as Micron will be able to further access high-purity minerals and lessen its reliance on concentrated overseas capacities. The investment comes under Micron's previously announced plans to invest up to $3 billion in its U.S. supply-chain ecosystem, and amid its overall plan to invest more than $250 billion through 2035 for memory-chip production. In addition to building out its semiconductor manufacturing capacity, Micron is clearly working on ensuring the security of the materials it needs for its fabs.

About Micron Stock

Based in Boise, Idaho, Micron produces memory and storage products, including DRAM, NAND, and NOR solutions used in numerous applications ranging from data centers to artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, PCs, mobile devices, automotive systems, and more. Valued at $1.03 trillion by market capitalization, Micron is now a mega-cap semiconductor company.

MU stock currently trades near $856 per share, representing a significant jump of 345% from its 52-week low of $192.59, although shares are still approximately 31% lower than the 52-week high of $1,255. Tremendous gains aside, earnings growth has shifted the equation as far as the valuation goes. Shares of Micron currently trade at 11.9 times trailing earnings and 5 times forward earnings. The price-to-sales (P/S) ratio also stands at 7.6 times, which indicates that the market is giving a premium to the company's revenue base. The huge difference between Micron's trailing and forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratios also reflects how rapidly earnings expectations have changed amid AI-driven memory demand.

The recent critical minerals agreement is another factor that supports Micron's growth strategy. Indium's expanded facilities will provide domestic refining and manufacturing of semiconductor-grade materials, helping Micron gain a supply source closer to home. Moreover, the agreement is in line with the company's enormous manufacturing project also based in New York.

Micron Reports Positive Earnings

As can be seen from the company's latest financial results, it is becoming more and more important for Micron to secure its supply chain. Micron reported fourth-quarter fiscal 2026 revenue of $54.23 billion compared to $11.32 billion a year earlier. Adjusted EPS also came in at $33.42 versus $3.03 in the same period a year ago. These results beat consensus estimates, which called for EPS of $31.77 on revenue of roughly $51.3 billion.

Perhaps even more importantly, management sees growth ahead. Micron guided Q1 fiscal 2027 revenue of $61.5 billion, plus or minus $1.5 billion, and adjusted EPS of $38.15, plus or minus $1.

The AI memory boom appears to be creating unusual economic conditions for the company. Micron generated operating cash flow of $43.97 billion during Q4 and ended fiscal 2026 with $73.48 billion of cash, marketable investments, and restricted cash. Full year adjusted free cash flow came in at $62.31 billion.

With Micron's recent performance in mind, the recent Indium investment looks more like supply-chain insurance rather than just an individual move. If AI-driven memory demand keeps increasing memory requirements, Micron will need to be able to ensure its access to crucial materials.
