OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is sounding an alarm on the AI infrastructure boom — and traders in neocloud names like CoreWeave (NASDAQ: CRWV ), Nebius Group (NASDAQ: NBIS ) and IREN Ltd. (NASDAQ: IREN ) are taking notice.

CRWV stock is moving. See the real-time price action here.

In a recent appearance on the "Sources" podcast , Altman drew a sharp line between OpenAI’s own compute strategy and what he sees happening across the broader market.

‘Unsustainable Silliness’: Altman Warns on Speculative Bets

“I’m not worried about our compute buildout plans,” he said. “I think we are going to be able to use all of the compute very profitably that we were planning to build.”

But he was far less sanguine about everyone else. “I am worried about the world’s compute buildout plans,” Altman said.

“I am seeing the first signs of what feels to me like unsustainable silliness of random new neoclouds popping up, people claiming that they’re going to build gigantic amounts of compute next year that I think they don’t have the revenue to support or a buyer.”

Contracted Revenue vs. Speculative Buildout

He also flagged the mentality driving capital into the space: “I think people right now are kind of in a ‘cost is no object’ mode. We’re just going to build out crazy amounts of compute and somebody will pay an even higher price for it.”

Altman did not rule out a painful reset if OpenAI succeeds in driving down compute costs.

“If we are able to succeed with our efforts to hugely drive down the cost of compute and the efficiency of compute up a lot, then you can imagine a world where there are some people that made dumb financial decisions. That happens in every boom,” he said.

Bitcoin miners-turned-AI infrastructure plays IREN, Hut 8 (NASDAQ: HUT ), Bitdeer (NASDAQ: BTDR ) and Cipher Mining (NASDAQ: CIFR ) have drawn scrutiny as they pour balance-sheet capital into GPU campuses without the long-term contracted revenue that anchors CoreWeave and Nebius.

With Altman himself now flagging the risk of “dumb financial decisions” among neocloud operators, traders may start pricing in a wider dispersion between funded, contracted players and speculative buildouts chasing the AI compute gold rush.
