Changes versus comparable periods

  • Net income rose 42.6% year over year; common earnings rose to about $0.8 million from about $0.5 million. Lower loan-loss provision and operating expenses contributed, while income tax expense increased to $0.384 million from $0.109 million.
  • Net interest income edged up 0.5%, but net interest margin declined 21 basis points to 3.51%. Lower loan yields and average loan balances reduced loan interest income; lower funding costs partly offset the decline.
  • At quarter-end, assets increased 1.6% from December 31, 2011. Deposits rose 1.7%, securities increased 17.1%, and net loans including held-for-sale declined 3.7%, which management attributed mainly to diminished loan demand.
  • Cash increased $2.4 million during the quarter, versus a $12.7 million increase in Q1 2011. Investing cash use chiefly reflected securities purchases, partly offset by net loan reductions.

Outlook, risks, and unusual items

  • The filing provides no numerical earnings or growth guidance. Management cautions that interim results are not necessarily indicative of full-year results. The company stated it did not anticipate paying a cash dividend in the foreseeable future.
  • Credit indicators weakened in some respects: non-accrual loans rose to $9.215 million from $8.710 million at year-end; net non-performing assets increased to $10.746 million from $9.973 million; and loans 30 or more days past due totaled $13.123 million, versus $7.929 million at year-end. Net charge-offs were $0.601 million, compared with $0.317 million in Q1 2011. The allowance was $10.357 million, or 2.43% of loans, and covered 113.5% of net non-performing loans.
  • Commercial real estate represented about 41% of loans, leaving the portfolio exposed to property values, occupancy and local economic conditions. Agricultural, construction, commercial and consumer lending also carry borrower, collateral and economic risks. Non-performing assets were 1.4% of total assets.
  • Undisbursed loan commitments were $164.352 million; standby letters of credit were $1.774 million. The reserve for unfunded commitments was $0.793 million. Management reported $36 million in other-bank unsecured lines and $141.860 million of FHLB borrowing capacity. The loan-to-deposit ratio was 60.8%.
  • The Bank’s reported capital ratios exceeded well-capitalized thresholds: leverage 9.90% versus 5.0%; Tier 1 risk-based 17.13% versus 6.0%; and total risk-based 18.40% versus 10.0%.
  • The filing identifies the European sovereign-debt situation as a risk that could affect financial markets and the U.S. recovery. It reports no material pending legal proceeding and no material change in market-risk disclosures. Management judged disclosure controls effective and reported no material quarterly change in internal controls over financial reporting.
  • The company had replaced its TARP preferred stock with $22.847 million of SBLF preferred stock in September 2011 and repurchased and canceled the related Treasury warrant in November 2011, ending its TARP Capital Purchase Program participation. In Q1 2012 it declared a 1% stock dividend.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether rising past-due and non-accrual balances, higher net charge-offs, and lower allowance coverage remain contained in subsequent quarters.
  • Loan demand, portfolio mix and commercial real estate exposure, along with collateral values and the performance of restructured loans.
  • Whether deposit growth and available borrowing capacity continue to support liquidity as loans and securities change.
  • Whether margin pressure from lower asset yields persists, and whether noninterest income, expenses and effective taxes support earnings improvement.
  • The terms and regulatory treatment of SBLF preferred stock, including its dividend cost, and the sustainability of capital levels and common earnings.
