Gross margin improved mainly because of product mix favoring higher-margin electronics sales. Operating expenses increased 8%; R&D rose 19% and SG&A rose 3%, reflecting strategic investment, Sualab-related costs, higher stock-based compensation and incentive accruals. The effective tax rate was 11%, versus 7%.
At quarter-end, cash and investments totaled $845.4 million, including $239.2 million in cash and cash equivalents. Cognex reported no long-term debt and said existing liquidity and operating cash flow should cover requirements for the next 12 months. Total assets were $1.89 billion and total liabilities were $557.6 million. Capital expenditures were $3.1 million. The company repurchased $51.0 million of shares and paid $9.5 million in dividends during the quarter.
Changes, outlook and risks
Revenue declined mainly because of lower automotive sales, with COVID-19-related effects emerging late in the quarter; higher electronics revenue partly offset the decrease. Revenue fell 7% in the Americas and 18% in Europe, while it rose 16% in Greater China and 21% in other Asia. Foreign-currency losses were $3.0 million, compared with $0.2 million a year earlier, primarily related to an intercompany balance associated with an intellectual-property transfer. Investment income increased 7% to $5.2 million.
Management expected Q2 2020 revenue to be below Q1 as COVID-19 effects expanded, including weaker demand in some industries, customer-facility shutdowns, supply-chain disruption, longer delivery times and higher delivery costs. It expected Q2 gross margin in the mid-70% range, but below Q1, citing lower revenue and less favorable mix. Management did not provide a clear full-year revenue or earnings forecast and said the duration and severity of COVID-19 effects were difficult to quantify.
Key risks include further order delays or cancellations, customer and supplier disruptions, higher logistics costs, potential excess inventory, and possible investment-credit or acquired-asset impairment losses. The filing also cites foreign-exchange, customer-concentration and industry exposure, product and supply risks, and tax uncertainties. Cognex recorded $160,000 of investment credit losses and $300,000 of receivables credit losses in Q1. It was evaluating possible effects of a German withholding-tax law interpretation that emerged in April. The board declared a $0.055-per-share dividend payable May 29, 2020. The company reported no material change in market-risk exposure and said disclosure controls were effective.
