Auto-dimming mirror shipments rose 13% overall, including 10% growth in North America and 15% internationally. Cost of goods sold fell to 62.1% of sales from 65.5%. Management attributed the margin improvement to stronger orders, favorable product mix, and structural cost savings, partly offset by higher raw-material and freight costs. Engineering and R&D expense fell 7%; SG&A was essentially flat. The effective tax rate was 16.1%, versus 16.6%.
Cash, liquidity, debt, and capital allocation
At March 31, 2021, cash and cash equivalents were $455.9 million, short-term investments $25.9 million, and long-term investments $172.9 million. Reported working capital was $787.3 million. Current liabilities were $223.2 million against current assets of $1,010.5 million. The company had no borrowings outstanding under its $150 million revolving credit facility, which expires in October 2023; it was in compliance with covenants.
Operating cash flow was $190.8 million; investing activities used $40.6 million, including $12.0 million for the Guardian acquisition and $12.6 million in capital expenditures. Financing activities used $117.7 million, including $97.7 million of share repurchases and $29.2 million of dividends paid. Gentex repurchased 2.76 million shares at a reported average price of $35.46 and had 6.66 million shares remaining under its authorization at quarter-end. The declared quarterly dividend was $0.12 per share.
Material changes, outlook, and risks
Revenue and earnings improved year over year, with stronger automotive shipments and higher margins; diluted EPS also benefited from a lower share count. Management estimated that electronics and other part shortages reduced Q1 revenue by approximately $45 million, despite the quarter being the company’s second-highest sales quarter on record. Gentex acquired Guardian Optical Technologies for approximately $12.0 million in March; the Israeli company develops automotive in-cabin sensing technology. Acquisition accounting remained subject to finalization.
Management maintained its 2021 guidance: revenue of $1.94–$2.02 billion; gross margin of 39%–40%; operating expenses of approximately $210–$220 million; tax rate of 16%–18%; capital expenditures of $85–$95 million; and depreciation and amortization of $105–$110 million. It forecast 2022 revenue approximately 8%–13% above estimated 2021 revenue. The company’s underlying vehicle-production forecast assumed 10% growth in its primary markets in 2021 versus 2020 and 7% growth in 2022 versus 2021.
Potential EU tariffs scheduled for June 1, 2021 could add an estimated $7–$10 million of 2021 expense, not included in guidance. Other key uncertainties include COVID-19 effects, vehicle-production levels, continued supply shortages, customer pricing pressure, tariffs, and competition or technology shifts such as cameras replacing mirrors. Management said it believed cash, investments, operating cash flow, and available credit were sufficient for anticipated needs. It reported no material pending legal proceeding expected to materially affect the company and no significant unrecorded off-balance-sheet arrangements.
