Financial condition, funding and liquidity
- Total assets were $3.36 billion, up 1.1% from year-end 2023. Loans were $2.62 billion, up $40.1 million (1.6%); commercial real estate loans rose $28.9 million and multifamily loans rose $11.5 million.
- Deposits were $2.72 billion, up $52.0 million (1.9%). Certificates of deposit increased $53.1 million to $697.9 million. The average rate on interest-bearing deposits rose to 2.52%, up 175 bps year over year.
- Cash and cash equivalents were $90.5 million. Reported available primary and secondary liquidity sources totaled $1.34 billion, including $1.11 billion of FHLB advance availability and $55 million in unsecured credit lines.
- Borrowings included $135.0 million outstanding under the Federal Reserve Bank Term Funding Program (BTFP), $38.6 million of long-term FHLB advances and $54.3 million of subordinated debt. There were no short-term FHLB advances at quarter-end, versus $150.0 million at December 31, 2023. BTFP borrowings are secured by pledged securities and have terms of up to one year.
- Shareholders’ equity was $372.3 million, up 1.3%. The company repurchased 21,303 shares for $826,000 and declared $0.25 per share in dividends.
- Bank regulatory capital ratios included 13.16% common equity Tier 1, 14.39% total risk-based capital and 11.19% Tier 1 leverage. Management reported capital well above applicable requirements.
Material changes and asset quality
- Interest expense rose $8.7 million (133.5%) year over year, chiefly because of higher deposit costs and increased other borrowings. Interest income rose $6.0 million, but the expense increase drove lower net interest income and margin.
- The allowance for loan losses was $31.5 million, or 1.20% of loans, versus 1.22% at year-end. Total allowance for credit losses, including unfunded commitments, was $34.1 million, or 1.30% of loans. Net loan charge-offs were $217,000.
- Nonperforming assets rose to $22.0 million, or 0.65% of assets, from $10.4 million, or 0.31%. Nonperforming loans increased to $20.3 million from $8.8 million; substandard loans increased to $35.1 million from $28.2 million.
- Management attributed much of the increase in nonperforming loans to two relationships totaling $9.7 million: a construction/multifamily development loan affected by delayed occupancy certificates and a $4.7 million relationship secured by residential investment properties. Management said it did not anticipate losses on either relationship. The filing describes subsequent unit sales and a $170,000 reduction in the first relationship’s balance after quarter-end.
- Available-for-sale securities had $46.6 million of net unrealized losses, up from $43.4 million at year-end; 280 of 291 securities in a loss position had been so for more than 12 months. Management attributed the declines to factors other than credit losses and recorded no securities credit-loss allowance. The portfolio’s effective duration was 4.2 years.
Outlook, risks and contingencies
- The filing provides no specific earnings or financial guidance. Management notes actual results may differ from forward-looking statements and that quarterly results are not necessarily indicative of full-year results.
- Interest-rate sensitivity modeling estimates projected net interest income would change by +3.4% for an immediate, sustained 200-bp rate increase, and by −5.2% for a 200-bp decrease. Actual impacts depend on repricing, balance-sheet mix and other factors.
- Certificates of deposit totaling $640.2 million mature within 12 months. Uninsured deposits were $781.9 million; public funds above FDIC insurance limits were reported as fully collateralized. These funding concentrations and maturities are relevant liquidity considerations.
- Outstanding commitments included $373.6 million of available lines of credit, $203.8 million of undisbursed loans in process, $174.5 million of commitments to originate loans and $6.7 million of standby letters of credit. These may create future funding and credit exposure.
- Management stated ordinary-course claims and litigation are not expected to materially affect financial condition or results. The filing reported no material changes to previously disclosed risk factors. It identifies credit quality, interest rates, real estate values, deposit funding, economic conditions, cyber incidents, regulation and severe weather among relevant risks.
- Unusual comparisons affected expenses: Q1 2023 included a $739,000 recovery on a prior OREO sale, while Q1 2024 did not; Q1 2023 also included a $249,000 net securities-sale loss, absent in Q1 2024.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Track performance of the two loan relationships driving the increase in nonperforming assets, including collections, collateral values and any losses after quarter-end.
- Monitor deposit pricing, the $640.2 million of near-term CD maturities, uninsured deposits and continued reliance on BTFP and other wholesale funding.
- Assess whether loan growth and changes in criticized loans are adequately covered by the allowance, particularly in commercial real estate, construction and multifamily lending.
- Follow interest-rate impacts on net interest margin and the market value of securities; compare reported sensitivity estimates with actual repricing and deposit behavior.
- Review the $46.6 million securities unrealized loss and associated accumulated other comprehensive loss, including potential effects if securities must be sold before recovery.
