Interest income increased to $1.0 million from $0.3 million, while interest expense declined to $0.7 million from $1.1 million. The effective tax rate was 19% versus 24% in the prior-year quarter, primarily due to higher excess tax benefits from share-based compensation relative to lower pretax income.

At March 31, 2024, cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash were $45.9 million, compared with $53.6 million at December 31, 2023. Total debt, including notes payable, was $56.5 million. The $90.0 million revolving credit facility had $35.0 million utilized and $55.0 million available, expires March 2, 2026, and was in compliance with its covenants. Bank debt to equity was 13.7%.

Material Changes Versus the Prior Comparable Period

  • Sales declined $40.9 million, primarily because of lower communications volumes and unfavorable product mix in PLP-USA, lower communications volumes in The Americas, and lower communications and energy volumes in EMEA. Asia-Pacific sales increased 4% excluding currency effects, led by higher energy-product volumes.
  • Excluding currency translation, consolidated sales decreased approximately 23% and gross profit decreased approximately 34%. Currency translation increased reported sales by $0.7 million in Q1 2024, compared with a $4.6 million unfavorable impact in Q1 2023.
  • Gross margin contracted as the benefit from prior price increases and lower raw-material and freight costs did not meaningfully improve first-quarter 2024 results, while lower volumes and product mix reduced operating leverage.
  • Costs and expenses decreased 13% to $32.6 million, reflecting lower sales, personnel and professional-services costs and other cost-containment actions. The decline was insufficient to offset the reduction in gross profit.
  • Operating cash flow fell substantially because of lower earnings and working-capital changes. Investing cash use declined to $0.7 million from $22.3 million, primarily because Q1 2023 included the Pilot Plastics acquisition and higher capital expenditures.
  • Financing cash use increased to $11.7 million from $9.3 million, including $5.5 million spent to repurchase 42,731 shares from related parties. The Company declared a quarterly dividend of $0.20 per share.
  • Accumulated other comprehensive loss increased to $66.8 million from $60.3 million at year-end, principally because of a $6.6 million unfavorable foreign-currency translation adjustment.

Outlook, Risks, Contingencies and Unusual Items

Management did not provide specific revenue, earnings or margin guidance. Management stated that the business portfolio and financial position remain sound and strategically positioned, while emphasizing global market opportunities, manufacturing-capacity adjustments, cost containment, new-product development, efficiency initiatives and potential mergers and acquisitions.

  • Management expects operating cash flows, existing cash and the credit facility to fund debt repayments, capital expenditures, dividends and potential acquisitions for the foreseeable future. It stated that most accumulated non-U.S. cash is expected to remain outside the United States.
  • Inflationary pressures in raw materials and freight have generally subsided, but a renewed increase could require additional price increases that may negatively affect demand.
  • Key risks include weak infrastructure demand, global economic and geopolitical instability, interest rates, foreign-exchange movements, raw-material availability and costs, supply-chain disruptions, customer funding constraints, technology changes affecting communications infrastructure, labor disruption, cybersecurity, regulatory matters and acquisition execution.
  • Foreign-exchange exposure remains material. A hypothetical 10% currency-rate change would have affected the fair value of exposed instruments by approximately $4.9 million and pretax income by approximately $0.6 million at March 31, 2024. A 100-basis-point interest-rate increase would have increased quarterly interest expense by approximately $0.1 million.
  • The Company reported $13.6 million of outstanding guarantees and $0.9 million of outstanding letters of credit. It had no reserves for known global legal matters and stated that no pending legal proceedings were expected to have a material adverse effect. A previously disclosed Canadian lawsuit was settled in Q4 2023 for $4.3 million Canadian dollars, net of insurance.
  • Q1 included a $1.8 million gain on the sale of property and equipment and a one-time gain on the sale of capital assets in Asia-Pacific. EMEA gross profit also benefited from the favorable resolution of a warranty claim.
  • The Company is evaluating whether to make additional contributions to its U.S. pension plan during 2024. The Board approved termination of the plan in August 2023, and preliminary administrative actions have begun.
  • Management concluded that disclosure controls and procedures were effective as of March 31, 2024, with no material changes to internal control over financial reporting.
