The combined net interest and noninterest income figure is a simple sum of the reported line items, not a separately reported revenue measure.

  • Margins and returns: Tax-equivalent net interest margin was 3.57% in Q3 versus 3.58% a year earlier, and 3.60% for the nine months versus 3.59%. Nine-month return on average equity was 9.12% (9.62% in 2014); return on average assets was 1.16% (1.20%).
  • Balance sheet: Total assets were $5.11 billion, up 5.71% from year-end 2014. Loans and leases were $3.96 billion, up 7.24%; deposits were $4.02 billion, up 5.69%. Available-for-sale securities were $784.6 million, down $6.5 million from year-end.
  • Asset quality: Nonperforming assets were $26.9 million, down 36.7% from year-end; they were 0.66% of loans and leases, versus 1.13% at year-end and 0.94% a year earlier. The allowance was $87.6 million, or 2.22% of loans and leases, compared with 2.39% a year earlier. Year-to-date net recoveries were $0.39 million, versus $0.66 million of net charge-offs in 2014.
  • Cash flow: For the nine months, operating activities provided $70.6 million, investing activities used $304.3 million, and financing activities provided $231.7 million. Cash and cash equivalents ended at $64.2 million, down $2.0 million from year-end. The large investing outflow chiefly reflected loan growth and increased equipment held under operating leases.
  • Debt and liquidity: Short-term borrowings were $283.5 million; long-term debt and mandatorily redeemable securities were $57.6 million; subordinated notes were $58.8 million. Management reported $439 million of available Federal Reserve borrowing capacity, $65.1 million of additional FHLB capacity, and about $241 million of short-term bank borrowing capacity. Management stated available funding sources were adequate.
  • Capital and distributions: Shareholders’ equity was $639.2 million; equity-to-assets was 12.52%, and book value per share was $24.51. The company and bank exceeded the stated “well capitalized” thresholds. The company paid $0.164 per share in Q3 dividends and reported a 29.82% trailing-four-quarter payout ratio.

Material changes versus comparable periods

  • Q3 net income declined 6.8% year over year, while nine-month net income was essentially unchanged. Lower loan-loss provision and higher income were offset by higher operating expenses and taxes.
  • Noninterest income increased 9.0% in Q3 and 7.6% year to date. Equipment rental income was a major contributor, rising 34.9% and 30.0%, respectively, alongside growth in the equipment rental portfolio.
  • Noninterest expense increased 9.1% in Q3 and 8.6% year to date. Higher salaries and employee benefits, leased-equipment depreciation, and other expenses were notable contributors.
  • Q3 net interest income increased, supported by loan growth, while the tax-equivalent margin edged down one basis point. Average earning-asset yields were slightly lower.
  • Loan and lease balances expanded, while nonperforming assets and impaired loans declined from year-end. Delinquencies of 30 days or more were 0.46%, up from 0.36% a year earlier, mainly due to aircraft financing.

Outlook, risks, contingencies, and unusual items

  • Outlook: The filing provides no specific earnings or revenue guidance. Management’s liquidity statement was that funding sources were adequate. Forward-looking statements are subject to risks including interest-rate changes, economic downturns, regulatory or accounting changes, competition, and developments affecting industries with credit concentrations.
  • Credit risks: Management highlighted aircraft collateral and foreign exposure, particularly Brazil and Mexico. Brazilian recession and currency movements increased borrowers’ cost of servicing U.S.-dollar debt and contributed to higher aircraft-loan delinquencies. Management also cited global economic and geopolitical risks and said it continued to include a global-risk factor in reserve analysis.
  • Market sensitivity: Management reported $596.2 million more assets than liabilities scheduled to reprice within one year, approximately 1.31% as stated in the filing. The filing reported no material change in market risks since year-end 2014.
  • Legal settlement: A dispute involving the Morris Family Trusts, which held about 21% of outstanding company shares, was settled and approved October 8, 2015, after quarter-end. The settlement permits family representatives to direct diversification of trust holdings. The company agreed to cooperate with potential future share sales, provide a $150,000 credit for certain trustee fees, and bear up to $400,000 of specified future diversification-related expenses.
  • Tax and other items: The 2014 comparison included a $1.18 million one-time tax benefit from tax-authority settlements and expiration of a statute of limitations; this contributed to the higher 2015 effective tax rates. The company issued a 10% stock dividend in August 2015; per-share and share data were retrospectively adjusted. It also repurchased $8.2 million of treasury stock during the first nine months.
  • Commitments: Standby letters of credit totaled $29.1 million at quarter-end. Loan commitments and guarantees create off-balance-sheet credit exposure; the filing notes that commitment amounts do not necessarily represent future cash requirements.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether aircraft-finance delinquencies and Brazil/Mexico exposure continue to affect credit quality, collateral values, and reserve adequacy.
  • Whether loan growth and deposit growth remain balanced, and how funding costs and net interest margin respond to interest-rate changes.
  • Whether the sharp rise in noninterest expense—especially salaries, leased-equipment depreciation, and other expenses—persists or moderates.
  • The expected timing, scale, and market impact of any future Morris Family Trust share sales, and the company’s related costs under the settlement.
  • Capital, liquidity, and asset-quality trends, including the allowance ratio, nonperforming assets, delinquencies, and available borrowing capacity.
