  • Q2 net realized and unrealized losses were $9.7. For the first half, realized losses were $17.8, partly offset by $5.2 of net unrealized appreciation.
  • For the first half, operating cash flow was negative $51.7; financing activities provided $55.2, including $308.0 of borrowings and $205.0 of debt repayments. Cash and restricted cash increased $2.9 after foreign-exchange effects.
  • The Board declared $0.38 per share for each of the first two 2023 quarters, or $0.76 for the half year, versus $0.34 per quarter and $0.68 for the first half of 2022.

Material changes and portfolio

  • Higher rates and portfolio size lifted investment income, particularly interest income. Q2 interest and debt financing expense rose to $20.5 from $11.0; first-half expense rose to $40.0 from $21.7. The filing attributes the increase to higher base rates and greater use of the Sumitomo facility, as well as higher debt outstanding.
  • First-half dividend income rose to $17.1 from $10.0, while other income declined to $7.2 from $8.2, primarily due to lower commitment and syndication fees.
  • The investment portfolio remained predominantly senior secured and floating-rate: 94.1% of debt investments at fair value bore floating rates, versus 94.5% at year-end. First-lien loans were 64.2% of portfolio fair value. The portfolio covered 142 companies and was 84.7% U.S.-based.
  • Four loans from two issuers were on non-accrual at June 30, versus five loans from three issuers at year-end. Non-accrual investments had $50.7 of amortized cost but only $0.1 of fair value.
  • Fair value was below amortized cost by approximately $30.4 across the portfolio. Most investments were Level 3 valuations using significant unobservable inputs; the filing reports $2,260.8 of Level 3 investments and $66.6 measured using NAV as a practical expedient.

Liquidity, outlook and risks

  • Asset coverage was 175.1%, down from 180.0% at year-end and above the 150% statutory minimum disclosed. BCSF reported approximately $104.3 of availability under its Sumitomo Credit Facility at June 30.
  • Debt principal maturities disclosed were $300.0 in 2026, $846.0 in 2026–2028 and $352.5 after five years; none was shown due within one year. The Sumitomo facility matures in December 2026. BCSF was in compliance with its Sumitomo and 2019-1 CLO covenants.
  • Non-qualifying assets were 29.26% of total assets, near the BDC limit that generally requires at least 70% of assets to be qualifying. Restricted securities were valued at $419.6, or 37.27% of NAV.
  • PIK income was $11.1 for the first half and is accrued rather than received in cash. The company recorded $1.7 of income and excise tax expense for the first half, versus none in 2022.
  • The filing provides no specific earnings or distribution guidance. Management cites risks from market conditions, credit performance, valuation uncertainty, interest rates and foreign-exchange movements. It also identifies continued stress in the banking system as a potential risk because the business depends on bank relationships. Forward-looking statements are not guarantees of future results.
  • Management reported effective disclosure controls and no material change in internal control over financial reporting during the quarter. BCSF reported no material legal proceedings.

Investor verification priorities

  • Check the latest non-accrual and watch-list status, borrower performance, recoveries and any changes to the $0.1 fair value assigned to non-accrual loans.
  • Assess valuation assumptions and potential sensitivity across Level 3 investments, particularly where comparative yields, recovery rates or EBITDA multiples are unobservable.
  • Monitor asset coverage, Sumitomo borrowing availability, debt costs and maturities, and the small margin between non-qualifying assets and the BDC threshold.
  • Evaluate whether cash earnings support distributions, considering PIK income, excise taxes, realized losses and negative operating cash flow.
  • Review portfolio concentration and exposure to floating rates, foreign currencies, affiliated investments and the investment-program joint ventures.
