Revenue by stream: licensing was $1,057.6 million (+9.5%); products $94.6 million (−0.8%); services $19.8 million (−3.0%). Licensing growth reflected stronger mobile adoption, patent licensing, CE and other-market revenue, partly offset by lower broadcast and PC recoveries and PC royalty pressure. Licensing gross margin remained 96%; product gross margin declined to 31% from 36%, and services gross margin to 1% from 12%.
Operating expenses rose chiefly due to higher G&A (+15%), including compensation, legal and professional costs, and higher S&M (+4%). R&D increased 1%. FY2018 included a $0.4 million restructuring credit versus $12.9 million of restructuring charges in FY2017. Other income was $12.9 million, including higher interest income, partly offset by $5.9 million of other expense, primarily investment impairment charges.
Fourth quarter: Revenue was $265.3 million versus $242.0 million a year earlier. Net income attributable to Dolby was $50.1 million versus $21.8 million; diluted EPS was $0.47 versus $0.21.

- Total liabilities were $463.2 million; the filing reports no long-term debt. Management said available cash, investments and operating cash flow should cover anticipated needs for at least 12 months.
- Operating cash flow was $352.2 million; capital expenditures were $72.8 million. Cash provided by investing activities was $78.3 million, while financing activities used $133.6 million.
- Dolby repurchased $150.5 million of shares and paid $66.2 million in dividends in FY2018. The quarterly dividend was raised to $0.19 per share after year-end. Approximately $351.5 million remained authorized for repurchases at year-end.

Material changes, outlook and notable items
- Tax Act: The FY2018 tax provision included a provisional $121.4 million charge related to U.S. tax reform, comprising a $49.6 million reduction in net deferred tax assets and a $71.8 million transition-tax liability payable over eight years. The company recorded a net loss attributable to Dolby of $81.6 million in Q1, largely reflecting the tax impact; subsequent quarters were profitable. The provisional tax accounting was subject to finalization.
- Revenue accounting transition: Dolby adopted ASC 606 in FY2019 using full retrospective application. It estimated FY2018 revenue recast under the new standard at approximately $1.1 billion versus $1.2 billion reported under the prior standard, mainly because revenue shifts into earlier periods. Recast figures were not final in this filing. ASC 606 also moves royalty recognition into the shipment quarter using estimates, potentially increasing quarterly volatility; it changes timing, not contract cash flows or total revenue.
- Business developments: Dolby reported more than 4,000 Atmos-enabled cinema screens, about 170 Dolby Cinema locations operating and more than 390 open or committed. It launched Dolby Voice Room during the year. Dolby Dimension headphones were introduced after year-end; anticipated related revenue and expenses were included in previously released FY2019 guidance, but the guidance amounts are not provided in this filing text.
- Management outlook: Management emphasized growth through audio leadership and expansion in imaging, cinema and communications, including Atmos, Vision and AC-4 adoption. No clear numerical FY2019 revenue or earnings guidance is provided in the filing text.
- Key risks: Licensee adoption, shipment reporting and recoveries can fluctuate; optical-disc decline pressures PC and disc-related royalties; competition and pricing pressure may limit adoption of Dolby formats. Other risks include patent expirations and enforcement limitations, especially in China and other emerging markets; dependence on standards and content/device availability; foreign-market and currency exposure; sole-source components and contract manufacturing; cybersecurity; and tax uncertainty.
- Regulatory and legal: The Korean Fair Trade Commission requested information about Dolby’s Korean business practices in October 2018; Dolby said it was cooperating. Management did not expect pending legal proceedings to materially affect results, while noting that outcomes are uncertain. The Dolby family and affiliates held 86.2% of combined voting power at year-end through the dual-class share structure.
