Reporting period: Fiscal year ended December 31, 2011. This is an annual filing, not a standalone quarterly report; fourth-quarter figures are included where available. Financial performance
| Metric | FY 2011 | FY 2010 |
|---|---|---|
| Net sales | $1,044.9 million | $1,002.4 million |
| Production margin | $212.2 million (20.3%) | $209.2 million (20.9%) |

Net sales rose 4%; foreign exchange contributed approximately $21 million, or less than two percentage points of growth. Operating income was a record, though operating and production margins declined as cost of goods sold grew faster than revenue. Raw-material and energy cost increases were not fully recovered through pricing.
Segment results: Specialty Minerals sales increased 2% to $676.1 million; operating income declined to $72.8 million from $74.7 million. Refractories sales increased 9% to $368.8 million; operating income rose to $33.2 million from $28.0 million, a segment record. Paper PCC sales were nearly flat at $497.0 million, while volumes fell 4%; contractual price increases and foreign exchange offset volume declines. Specialty PCC sales increased 10% and Processed Minerals sales increased 5%.
Fourth quarter: Net sales were $251.7 million versus $243.3 million in Q4 2010; operating income was $25.2 million versus $22.8 million; net income attributable to MTI was $19.6 million versus $15.8 million; diluted EPS was $1.11 versus $0.86.

Outlook, risks, and unusual items
- Management was cautious about global conditions, particularly Europe, and the durability of the recovery. No specific earnings or revenue guidance was provided. 2012 capital expenditures were estimated at $60–$75 million, principally for PCC plants and strategic growth projects.
- Growth priorities include new PCC satellite plants and emerging markets, Fulfill high-filler products, PCC coating applications, specialty minerals and biopolymers, refractory products, and selective acquisitions. Management noted there is no assurance these initiatives will succeed.
- Major risks include cyclical paper, steel, construction and automotive demand; customer mill closures, consolidation or bankruptcy; renewal and pricing of long-term PCC contracts; raw-material and energy cost or supply volatility; foreign exchange and international operating risks; environmental regulation; and pension assumptions and funding.
- NewPage’s Chapter 11 filing could expose the company to up to $16 million of asset impairment and additional bad-debt provisions; no impairment was recorded at year-end. NewPage-related 2011 sales were approximately $20 million. The Alizay, France mill remained closed pending a possible sale; its PCC facility had $5.3 million net book value and about $7 million of 2011 sales. The Anjalankoski, Finland satellite ceased operations in Q4; its $0.7 million remaining net book value was depreciated over the final four months.
- Pension plan funded status fell to approximately 70% from 85%, primarily due to a lower discount rate and increased benefit obligation. Management said minimum funding requirements were met and expected to contribute $12 million to pension plans in 2012.
- Environmental accruals included approximately $0.4 million each for the Canaan, Connecticut and Adams, Massachusetts matters. Potential Adams wastewater-treatment upgrades were estimated at $6–$8 million. The company also disclosed 77 pending silica cases and 27 pending asbestos cases; management did not expect a material effect, while noting claim outcomes are uncertain.
- Other notable items: $0.5 million of restructuring costs; $1.4 million foreign-currency loss upon deconsolidation of the Korean joint venture; and no goodwill impairment after a qualitative review. Auditors issued unqualified opinions on the financial statements and internal controls.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Whether weak paper volumes and sluggish European conditions continue, and the status of the Alizay mill and NewPage bankruptcy.
- Whether price increases can offset raw-material, energy and freight inflation without further margin deterioration.
- Fulfill commercialization, new satellite plant execution, and 2012 capital spending against management’s $60–$75 million estimate.
- The company’s pension funding trajectory and sensitivity to discount rates and investment returns.
- Potential liabilities and asset recoverability related to environmental matters, silica/asbestos claims, and customer contract or mill closures.
