Revenue growth was driven mainly by higher customer volume: 37,267 unique purchasers used the web-based interface, up 18.5%; average revenue per purchaser was relatively consistent. Existing customers generated approximately 89% of FY 2017 revenue. By product line, injection molding contributed $194.4 million (56.4% of revenue), CNC machining $103.7 million (30.1%), 3D printing $43.3 million (12.6%) and sheet metal $1.8 million (0.5%). International revenue was approximately 24% of total.
Liquidity, debt and capital
At year-end, cash and cash equivalents were $36.7 million, marketable securities totaled $94.5 million, and working capital was $121.2 million. Cash fell $32.1 million, primarily reflecting the RAPID acquisition. Total liabilities were $57.5 million and shareholders’ equity was $461.2 million.
Debt was $5.0 million drawn on a $30 million unsecured revolving credit facility, due November 2019. Operating cash flow was $81.7 million; property and equipment purchases were $32.6 million. Management said existing cash and operating cash generation should meet anticipated requirements for at least 12 months. The filing reports no off-balance-sheet arrangements and no expected cash dividends in the foreseeable future.
Changes, outlook and notable items
- Revenue rose 15.6%; gross margin improved slightly from 56.0% to 56.3%, and operating margin increased from 20.7% to 21.0%. Marketing and sales expense rose 23.2%, while total operating expenses increased 15.6%.
- In November 2017, Proto Labs acquired RAPID for $121.8 million—$110.5 million net cash and $11.3 million in stock—adding sheet metal services and CNC capacity. RAPID contributed $3.6 million of revenue and a $0.7 million net loss after acquisition; acquisition goodwill was $99.6 million.
- Management expects continued investment in facilities, equipment, technology, sales and personnel to support growth. It expects cost of revenue to rise in dollars but remain relatively stable as a share of revenue; no specific revenue or earnings guidance was provided.
- The 2017 effective tax rate was 30.4%, down from 33.4%. Tax reform produced a $4.2 million benefit from revaluing deferred tax liabilities and a provisional $2.4 million transition-tax expense; the accounting was not complete at year-end. Management expected a lower effective tax rate in 2018 and beyond under then-current law.
- Other income included a $0.4 million favorable legal settlement. Management stated that pending ordinary-course litigation was not expected to have a material adverse effect. The auditor gave unqualified opinions on the financial statements and internal controls; RAPID, representing 3% of assets and 1% of revenue, was excluded from the internal-control assessment.
Principal risks and contingencies
Key risks include intense competition and rapid technology change; the ability to maintain speed, pricing and quality while scaling; customer demand and product-development cycles; dependence on reliable facilities, systems and suppliers; cyber incidents involving confidential customer designs; international, foreign-exchange and Brexit uncertainty; acquisition integration; intellectual-property and product-liability claims; and regulatory, tax and environmental compliance. The company does not hedge foreign-currency exposure and said a hypothetical 10% adverse currency movement could materially affect operating results, though not generally its financial position.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Whether RAPID integration, acquired goodwill and expected synergies support the acquisition price and future margins.
- Whether customer and revenue growth can continue to absorb planned capacity and operating investments.
- How the new revenue-recognition standard, adopted January 1, 2018, affects reported results; the company estimated a $1.5 million opening retained-earnings increase.
- Final tax-reform calculations, including the transition-tax estimate and the resulting effective tax rate.
- Cash deployment, revolving-facility use, and the company’s ability to fund growth while maintaining liquidity.
