2 Reasons to Buy Super Micro Stock — And 1 Reason to Be Cautious

The past month has been solid for Super Micro Computer (SMCI) shareholders. SMCI stock has jumped about 23% over the past month after the company delivered solid fourth-quarter results and reported a record backlog, continuing to benefit from strong demand for its AI and IT infrastructure solutions. Super Micro’s Q1 fiscal 2027 revenue forecast also beat expectations. The outlook indicates that demand for its AI solutions remains strong while the company continues to expand its enterprise customer base.

While SMCI stock has gained notably, there are two compelling reasons that still support its investment case. But one important risk also poses a challenge. Let's take a closer look.

Super Micro's Backlog and AI Demand

Super Micro Computer is well-positioned to deliver strong growth in fiscal 2027 and beyond, driven by AI demand, a solid backlog, and its growing enterprise customer base. The company reported $39.1 billion in fiscal 2026 revenue, representing an increase of 78% year-over-year (YOY). Momentum accelerated in Q4; revenue climbed 93% YOY and 9% sequentially to $11.1 billion. The company also secured more than $60 billion in new orders by the end of Q4, providing significant visibility into future demand and indicating that AI infrastructure spending remains robust.

Supporting SMCI stock's investment case and future growth is the growing contribution from enterprise and channel customers. Revenue from this group reached $5.6 billion in Q4, accounting for roughly 50% of total sales versus 28% in the prior quarter. Segment revenue increased 172% YOY and 98% sequentially, reflecting strong demand for higher-performance computing, storage, and networking infrastructure.

The changing customer mix is beneficial because it reduces Super Micro’s reliance on a relatively small number of major data-center customers. While its enterprise revenue surged, OEM appliance and large data-center customers contributed another $5.5 billion during the quarter.

The near-term outlook also points to exceptionally strong momentum. Management’s Q1 revenue guidance of $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion implies approximately 200% YOY growth at the midpoint and sequential expansion of roughly 35%.

Super Micro is also working to capture more of the AI infrastructure opportunity through its Data Center Building Block Solutions (DCBBS) platform, which integrates GPU and CPU systems, enterprise storage, direct liquid cooling, high-speed networking, data-center management software, and lifecycle services into a more complete infrastructure solution. This broader offering could allow Super Micro to capture a larger portion of customer spending as companies build out AI data centers.

Management is targeting $65 billion to $72 billion in fiscal 2027 revenue, supported by the AI infrastructure buildout. Given the strong demand, Super Micro's top line could exceed this guidance. Overall, accelerating AI demand, an expanding enterprise footprint, and a strong backlog give Super Micro a compelling foundation for another year of rapid growth.

The Valuation Is Compelling

Super Micro Computer appears well-positioned to maintain its strong growth trajectory in the coming quarters. Yet despite its favorable growth prospects, SMCI stock is trading at relatively modest valuation levels.

SMCI stock currently has a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 9.8 times and a price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of 0.68 times. These multiples are both notably below its industry peers.

SMCI stock also looks reasonably valued relative to its expected earnings growth. Analysts project that EPS will increase by 24% in fiscal 2027 to $4.04, followed by 21% growth in fiscal 2028 to $4.90.

With strong anticipated earnings growth and low valuation multiples, Super Micro's risk-reward profile remains attractive.

Margins and Competition Add Risk

Super Micro Computer’s profitability improved significantly in Q4, with adjusted gross margin reaching 17.6%, compared with 9.6% in the same period a year earlier. The company's improved revenue mix, focus on high-value products, and tight control over operating costs position it well to expand margins.

However, maintaining margins at these elevated levels may prove challenging. Super Micro’s guidance for Q1 adjusted gross margin of 10.4% to 10.8% points to a substantial sequential decline.

In addition, competitive pressures add risk. Super Micro operates in a highly competitive market, and pricing pressure amid increased competition could weigh on profitability and make it more difficult for the company to expand its margins.

The Key Takeaway

Strong AI-driven demand, a record backlog, an expanding enterprise customer base, and a relatively low valuation make SMCI stock an attractive investment. However, investors should remain cautious about the sustainability of its recent margin improvement and the competitive pressures facing the business.

Overall, Super Micro Computer stock has a consensus “Hold” rating based on 20 analysts with coverage. The mean price target of $41.38 implies potential upside of about 6% from current levels.
