Is Veeva Systems Stock Underperforming the Dow?

Pleasanton, California-based Veeva Systems Inc. (VEEV) provides cloud-based software for the life sciences industry. Valued at $45.4 billion by market cap, the company offers enterprise application, multichannel platform, customer relationship, and content management solutions.

Companies worth $10 billion or more are generally described as “large-cap stocks,” and VEEV perfectly fits that description, with its market cap exceeding this mark, underscoring its size, influence, and dominance within the health information services industry. VEEV dominates life sciences cloud software through deep industry specialization, tailoring its unified Veeva Vault platform to strict FDA and GxP compliance.

Despite its notable strength, VEEV slipped 9.6% from its 52-week high of $310.50, achieved on Oct. 7, 2025. Over the past three months, VEEV stock has gained 77.6%, notably outperforming the Dow Jones Industrials Average’s ($DOWI) marginal dip during the same time frame.

In the longer term, shares of VEEV rose 25.7% on a YTD basis, outperforming DOWI’s YTD gains of 7.8%. However, the stock climbed marginally over the past 52 weeks, underperforming DOWI’s 12.8% returns over the last year.

To confirm the bullish trend, VEEV has been trading above its 200-day moving average since early August. The stock is trading above its 50-day moving average since late May, with slight fluctuations.

VEEV’s underperformance has been primarily driven by broader biotech spending headwinds, heightened competitive scrutiny, and slowing revenue growth expectations across enterprise software. Despite solid underlying operational execution and stable revenue growth, investor sentiment has been tempered by reduced R&D and commercial IT spending among early-stage biopharma clients, as well as market anxiety surrounding its transition to Vault CRM away from legacy Salesforce infrastructure. Additionally, fears that emerging generative AI capabilities could disrupt traditional SaaS seat-based pricing models, alongside intense competition in life sciences software from tech giants like Salesforce, Inc. (CRM) and Microsoft Corporation (MSFT), have consistently weighed on overall investor confidence.

In the competitive arena of health information services, Certara, Inc. (CERT) has lagged behind VEEV, with 3.4% gains on a YTD basis and 21.1% losses over the past 52 weeks.

Wall Street analysts are reasonably bullish on VEEV’s prospects. The stock has a consensus “Moderate Buy” rating from the 27 analysts covering it, and the mean price target of $294.28 suggests a potential upside of 4.8% from current price levels.
