PulteGroup’s underperformance has been driven by slowing sales, declining earnings and weakening returns on capital. Sales have declined 1.3% annually over the past two years, while EPS has contracted 12.2% annually over the same period, reflecting weaker underlying growth. Meanwhile, waning returns on capital suggest its previous profit engines are losing momentum, weighing on the stock’s performance.

Analysts remain somewhat bullish on PHM, with the stock carrying a consensus “Moderate Buy” rating. Among the 17 analysts covering the stock, nine recommend a “Strong Buy,” one rates it a “Moderate Buy,” six suggest a “Hold” and one recommends a “Strong Sell.” Meanwhile, the average price target of $139.88 implies potential upside of 20.9% from the current share price.
