Microsoft Is Taking AI Beyond the Data Center, But Its Surface Business Is Just a Small Piece of the Pie

Microsoft (MSFT) is taking its artificial intelligence ambitions to a new level—and this time, the company is bringing some serious computing power directly to your desktop.

The technology giant unveiled its new Surface Laptop Ultra at an event in San Francisco on Wednesday, featuring Nvidia's (NVDA) powerful RTX Spark chip. Microsoft says the new laptop can outperform Apple's (AAPL) MacBook Pro in certain AI workloads, adding to the rivalry between two of the world's biggest technology companies.

But the announcement is about more than selling high-powered laptops. Microsoft is making a significant bet on how people will use artificial intelligence in the future—and where that computing will happen.

Microsoft Brings AI Computing to the Laptop

The new Surface Laptop Ultra is Microsoft's most powerful Surface laptop ever, featuring an Nvidia Blackwell graphics processing unit (GPU), a Grace central processing unit (CPU), and up to 128 gigabytes of unified memory.

That's enough horsepower to run AI models with more than 120 billion parameters directly on the computer, rather than sending every request to a remote data center.

Microsoft says the Surface Laptop Ultra will be available beginning Oct. 16, with prices starting at $2,599. The company also unveiled a Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a compact workstation designed for developers, starting at $5,999.

The devices are part of Microsoft's broader strategy for what it calls hybrid intelligence—allowing AI applications to use computing resources on a local device or in the cloud, depending on the task. That means that developers could test AI models, businesses could process sensitive information, and content creators could perform computing tasks without constantly relying on cloud servers.

Microsoft is also introducing new security capabilities designed to control what autonomous AI agents can access and accomplish on Windows devices.

And Microsoft isn't going it alone. Asus, Dell (DELL), HP (HPQ), Lenovo (LNVGY), and MSI are also introducing Windows computers powered by Nvidia's RTX Spark technology.

What Does This Mean for Microsoft Stock?

It’s immediately unclear if Microsoft’s announcement can move the needle for Microsoft's stock, but it comes as the company’s stock is challenging all-time highs. Microsoft's stock powered higher this summer as investors resumed pouring money into tech stocks, jumping nearly 40% in the past six months.

Shares trade at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 26.4—not horrible, considering the forward P/E of the S&P 500 ($SPX) is 20.9. MSFT stock is also at a discount from its five-year mean of 32.6.

The company’s fiscal 2026 fourth-quarter earnings report (for the period ending June 30) showed revenue of $90 billion, up 18% from a year ago. Net income was $35.8 billion, up 31% from the previous year, and diluted earnings of $4.81 per share were up from $4.74 per share. The company showed a $3.2 billion gain from its investment in Anthropic, the AI startup behind Claude that is expected to go public, perhaps as early as this quarter.

Full-year revenue was $331.8 billion, up 18% from fiscal 2025, with net income of $133.7 billion (up 31%) and EPS of $17.95 (up 32%).

“We are advancing the frontier on the cost-to-outcome curve, ensuring every customer can turn tokens into business results,” CEO Satya Nadella said. “This year, Azure revenue surpassed $100 billion for the first time, and Microsoft 365 Copilot reached over 30 million paid seats, reflecting the confidence customers are placing in us to power their AI transformation.”

What Do Analysts Expect for MSFT Stock?

The sentiment surrounding MSFT stock is generally bullish, with 46 of 51 analysts surveyed by Barchart having “Buy” recommendations. Only one has a “Sell” call, and four others recommend holding the stock. The mean price target of $577.98 implies a potential upside of 11% from current prices.

Will Microsoft Surface be a big winner? Priced at $2,600, the laptop won’t be for everyone’s taste. But remember—Microsoft's Surface hardware business is relatively small in comparison to Azure, Copilot, and enterprise applications, all of which provide the company with a massive presence in artificial intelligence. The more important thing here is that MSFT is bringing more AI computing directly to personal computers, giving the company another way to integrate AI into everyday workflows.

It also creates an interesting competitive dynamic with Apple, whose AI strategy has been built on creating on-device AI capabilities.

Microsoft doesn't necessarily need Surface Laptop Ultra to become a blockbuster consumer product. But it has a bigger opportunity in making Windows an essential platform for the next generation of AI applications—whether those applications run locally, in the cloud, or somewhere in between.
