Fastenal Stock Climbs 14% in a Month: Buy the High Now or Wait?

Fastenal Company FAST has climbed 14% in the past month, outperforming the Zacks Industrial Services industry, the Zacks Industrial Products sector and the S&P 500 Index.

The recent quarterly results have reinforced confidence among investors, given that earnings and net sales grew year over year by 15.9% and 14.7%, respectively. The top line topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 1.9%, while the bottom line met the same at 33 cents per share. (read more: Fastenal Q2 Earnings Meet Estimates, Sales Beat on Favorable Pricing)

FAST’s efforts in strengthening its technology-driven customer relationships, favorable pricing actions and broad-based demand trends are encouraging for its growth prospects. Besides, the company’s aim to ensure its profitability despite the elevated costs is a considerable aspect.

However, unfavorable price-cost dynamics, transportation expenses and elevated inflation are pulling back Fastenal’s near-term growth. Although the company is staying on track with increased top-line leverage, the bottom-line prospects are being restricted due to the ongoing macro uncertainties.

Let us decode the positive and negative factors that are shaping FAST stock’s prospects.

What is Boosting Fastenal’s Growth Momentum?

Sales Growth Driven by Share Gains: Fastenal delivered a strong second-quarter 2026 performance, with net sales rising year over year to $2.39 billion and daily sales increasing at the same rate. Importantly, growth was driven not only by improving market conditions but also by continued share gains among larger customers. Contract sales increased 17.6%, significantly outpacing the 7.3% growth in non-contract sales and now representing 75.8% of sales. Heavy manufacturing DSR grew 18.1%, while non-residential construction increased 17%. Pricing contributed approximately 290 basis points (bps) to sales growth. Fastenal also expanded its higher-value customer base, with sites generating at least $50,000 in monthly sales increasing 16.5% year over year.

Technology & Digital Expansion Strengthen Customer Relationships: Fastenal's technology-driven strategy continued to gain traction in the second quarter of 2026, supporting customer retention, deeper penetration and scalable growth. Digital Footprint DSR increased 16.2%, ahead of total company DSR, while the Digital Footprint represented 61.6% of total sales, up from 61% a year earlier. The company also signed 6,993 weighted FMI devices during the quarter, equivalent to 109 devices per day, up from 101 per day in the second quarter of 2025. This drove a 6.5% increase in the installed base year over year, while FMI sales reached 44.6% of the second-quarter 2026 sales, up approximately 60 bps. Meanwhile, eBusiness DSR grew 12.6%, highlighting continued customer adoption of integrated digital solutions and supporting Fastenal's long-term efficiency and relationship-building strategy.

Strong Operating Leverage Protects Profitability: Fastenal demonstrated solid cost discipline in the second quarter of 2026, allowing it to preserve profitability despite inflation and unfavorable price/cost dynamics. Gross margin declined 75 bps to 44.6%, primarily due to a roughly 40-basis-point net price/cost headwind, along with customer mix, transportation costs and rebates. However, selling, general and administrative (SG&A) expenses declined to 23.5% of sales from 24.4%, an 80-basis-point improvement, as higher sales leveraged FAST’s cost structure. Consequently, operating margin remained stable at 21%, while operating income increased 15.1% to $501.8 million and net income climbed 15.9% to $382.8 million. Operating cash flow was also strong at $265.7 million, while six-month operating cash flow rose 19.1% to $644.1 million, underscoring Fastenal's ability to convert earnings into cash.

Earnings Estimate Trend of FAST

FAST’s earnings estimates for 2026 and 2027 have moved upward over the past 30 days to $1.26 and $1.39 per share, respectively. The revised estimates for 2026 and 2027 imply year-over-year improvements of 15.6% and 10.1%, respectively.

Fastenal vs. Peers: Who Wins the MRO Race?

Fastenal competes with W.W. Grainger, Inc. GWW, MSC Industrial Direct Co., Inc. MSM and Applied Industrial Technologies, Inc. AIT across the broad-line maintenance and repair operation (MRO) and industrial distribution market, but each peer has a distinct focus.

Grainger is a scale-driven MRO distributor with an extensive product portfolio and strong digital capabilities, while MSC Industrial has greater specialization in metalworking, cutting tools and maintenance supplies. Applied Industrial Technologies is more focused on motion, power transmission, fluid power, automation and related engineered products. Fastenal differentiates itself through its high-touch, embedded distribution model, combining broad MRO supplies with on-site inventory, vending and digital solutions.

Thus, Fastenal appears to possess an advantage in embedded customer relationships, on-site service and technology-enabled inventory management. However, Grainger retains greater scale, while MSC Industrial and Applied Industrial Technologies offer deeper product specialization in certain categories.

What is Restricting FAST’s Prospects?

Pressures From Pricing, Tariffs & Inflation: Fastenal continues to face pressure on gross profitability from unfavorable price-cost dynamics, transportation expenses and inflation. In the second quarter of 2026, gross margin declined 75 basis points (bps) year over year to 44.6%, with net price-cost representing roughly a 40-basis-point headwind. Although pricing actions contributed about 290 bps to sales growth, they were not sufficient to fully offset higher product costs and tariff-related inflation. Transportation costs also increased, primarily because of fuel inflation, while customer rebates rose modestly due to timing. FAST noted that benefits from its fastener expansion project provided only a partial offset and largely anniversary early in the second quarter of 2026. Continued inflation and tariff pressures could therefore constrain margin expansion.

Cash Conversion & Working-Capital Pressures: Despite strong earnings growth, FAST’s cash conversion weakened in the second quarter of 2026 as higher sales generated greater working-capital requirements. In the second quarter, operating cash flow was $265.7 million, representing only 69.4% of net income compared with 84.4% in the year-ago quarter. Management attributed the lower conversion primarily to higher accounts receivable resulting from strong sales growth concentrated in the middle and latter part of the quarter. This was only partially offset by higher accounts payable associated with increased purchasing activity. Meanwhile, Fastenal continues to invest in its workforce and infrastructure, with total personnel reaching 24,795, up 1.8% year over year. These working-capital and operating investments could weigh on near-term cash conversion.

FAST’s Valuation Trend

FAST stock is currently trading at a premium compared with the industry peers, with a forward 12-month price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 38.15, as the trend lines suggest below.

Is There Any Upside Potential Left for FAST Stock?

Fastenal appears well-positioned for continued growth, supported by strong customer share gains, expanding digital adoption and resilient demand across manufacturing and non-residential construction. Its technology-driven model, including its FMI vending network and eBusiness platform, should further strengthen customer relationships and support operating efficiency. Earnings estimates for 2026 and 2027 have also moved higher, signaling confidence in the company’s earnings trajectory.

However, investors should remain cautious about FAST’s near-term upside. Inflation, tariffs, transportation costs and unfavorable price-cost dynamics pressured gross margins, while weaker operating cash flow conversion highlights working capital requirements. More importantly, FAST stock currently trades at a premium valuation compared with its industry peers, limiting the margin of safety.

Thus, given a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), investors may prefer to wait for a more attractive entry point for FAST stock. Although it has upside potential, the stock’s premium valuation makes patience prudent. You can see the complete list of today’s Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.
