QatarEnergy Eyes Cheniere Energy, Others for U.S. LNG Supplies

QatarEnergy is reportedly in discussions with several U.S. LNG producers, including Cheniere Energy, Inc. LNG, to secure multi-year supplies through 2031. The talks come as QatarEnergy looks to replace liquefied natural gas (“LNG”) volumes disrupted by damage to its Ras Laffan facility following Iranian strikes in March. The company is reportedly seeking 2-3 million metric tons per annum (MTPA) through 2031, signaling a shift from relying mainly on spot LNG cargoes toward longer-term supply arrangements.

The negotiations reportedly include Cheniere, Venture Global, Inc. VG and Woodside Energy Group Ltd WDS. QatarEnergy Trading, which manages a significant portion of the company’s LNG portfolio, is seeking additional supply to help meet its customer commitments, particularly as uncertainty surrounding Qatari exports persists.

Cheniere Could Be a Key U.S. LNG Supplier

Cheniere could be well-positioned to benefit from QatarEnergy’s search for replacement volumes. The company is one of the leading U.S. LNG producers and exporters, operating the Sabine Pass and Corpus Christi terminals. Together, the facilities have more than 54 MTPA of LNG production capacity in operation.

Cheniere’s expanding production base and destination-flexible LNG portfolio provide it with the ability to respond to changing global demand. Its supply network has also demonstrated resilience during disruptions in the Middle East, while the ramp-up of Corpus Christi Stage 3 has supported higher production.

Rising Cheniere Production Supports Supply Potential

Cheniere’s production momentum could strengthen its position in potential long-term agreements with QatarEnergy. In the second quarter of 2026, Cheniere produced and exported 184 cargoes totaling 672 trillion British thermal units, representing a 20% year-over-year increase. Improved operational reliability, the accelerated start-up of Corpus Christi Stage 3 trains and optimization initiatives contributed to the increase.

Following the stronger production performance, Cheniere raised the 2026 production forecast to 53-54 million tons from its previous range of 52-54 million tons.

The company has additional growth projects underway. More than 6 MTPA is under construction or commissioning at Corpus Christi, while Midscale Trains 8 and 9 are expected to add about 5 MTPA when completed. Meanwhile, a planned expansion at Sabine Pass could add more than 6 MTPA through Train 7 and related infrastructure improvements.

QatarEnergy Turns to U.S. LNG Amid Prolonged Disruption

The need for alternative supplies stems from significant disruption to QatarEnergy’s LNG operations. Two of the 14 LNG trains at Ras Laffan and the gas-to-liquids facility were damaged in the March strikes. QatarEnergy’s chief executive officer previously indicated that 12.8 million tons per year of LNG capacity could remain offline for three to five years.

The company has continued to renew force majeure notices, recently extending them through November, while uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz remains. Since roughly 80% of Qatar’s LNG shipments typically go to Asian buyers, prolonged disruptions could create additional pressure to secure replacement volumes.

U.S. LNG Projects Offer Replacement Capacity

QatarEnergy’s search for U.S. LNG highlights the growing importance of American export projects in the global market. According to data compiled by Rapidan Energy, U.S. projects under construction have about 25 MTPA of LNG available for purchase. Venture Global reportedly has the largest amount of uncontracted capacity at 10 MTPA, while Cheniere and Woodside each have around 6 MTPA available for sale.

For Cheniere, Venture Global and Woodside, potential business with QatarEnergy would further underscore the flexibility and strategic value of their U.S. LNG platform. Cheniere’s access to U.S. natural gas supplies, dedicated pipeline infrastructure and long-term supply arrangements provides a strong foundation for maintaining LNG production and meeting customer demand.

Potential Strategic Opportunity for Cheniere

The discussions with QatarEnergy could create an attractive opportunity for Cheniere as global LNG markets adjust to prolonged supply disruptions. QatarEnergy’s need for multi-year replacement volumes could support demand for U.S. LNG and provide potential offtake opportunities for producers with available capacity.

While Cheniere currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) and QatarEnergy have not commented on the reported discussions, the negotiations highlight how Middle East supply disruptions are reshaping global LNG trade flows. For Cheniere, the growing production capacity, expanding projects and flexible supply network position it to play an important role in meeting the market’s need for reliable LNG supplies.
