Oil ETFs to Benefit as Oil Prices Rally Due to Geopolitical Tensions

Oil prices climbed on Oct. 22, 2026, as escalating tensions in the Middle East heightened fears of further supply disruptions, while a larger-than-expected drawdown in U.S. crude inventories added to the upward pressure. Brent crude futures rose above $110 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate crude swiftly approached $100.

The latest rally reflects growing concerns that the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran could intensify, threatening energy infrastructure and shipping routes across the Middle East. Continued attacks by Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis on Saudi targets have heightened these concerns, while Iran has warned of retaliation against further U.S. hostilities. The prospect of a near-term diplomatic breakthrough remains uncertain, keeping a geopolitical risk premium embedded in crude prices.

The issues involving the Strait of Hormuz have been a key concern for energy markets because a prolonged disruption to shipping through the waterway could restrict global oil flows and push prices higher. Meanwhile, Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy infrastructure have added another layer of supply uncertainty.

U.S. Inventory Drawdown Contributes to Bullish Sentiment

Supply concerns were reinforced by the latest U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) data. U.S. crude inventories fell by 3.06 million barrels to 412.5 million barrels in the week ended Oct. 16, 2026, per EIA’s Weekly Report.

However, the U.S. administration has also considered releasing supplies from its emergency heating oil reserve to ease pressure on domestic fuel markets.

Oil prices could remain elevated if hostilities escalate, energy infrastructure suffers further damage, or shipping through key routes becomes more difficult. Conversely, credible peace negotiations, improved supply flows or a sustained recovery in production could ease the rally.

ETFs to Benefit as Oil Prices Increase

The near-term outlook for oil ETFs remains closely tied to developments in the Middle East, the security of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and evidence of sustained supply constraints. Further escalation could support crude futures and benefit funds such as BNO, while stronger oil prices could improve the earnings outlook for energy producers held by XLE.

As of now, the combination of geopolitical uncertainty and tighter U.S. crude inventories places oil markets firmly in focus. Whether the rally translates into lasting gains for energy ETFs will depend on how long supply risks persist and whether elevated prices feed through to energy companies' earnings and investment plans.
