Financial results and position
| Metric | Q1 2024 | Q1 2023 / prior date |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $0 | $0 |
| Research and development expense, net | $6.6 million | $7.8 million |
| General and administrative expense | $3.0 million | $3.7 million |
| Total operating expenses | $9.6 million | $11.6 million |
| Net loss | $8.7 million | $11.0 million |
| Net loss per share, basic and diluted | $0.31 | $0.43 |
| Cash and cash equivalents, March 31 | $84.1 million | $76.7 million at Dec. 31, 2023 |
| Operating cash used | $7.4 million | $15.1 million |
| Cash provided by financing | $14.8 million | $0.8 million |
Operating expenses fell about 17% year over year, and net loss narrowed about 21%. R&D costs declined mainly with lower Iomab-B CMC and clinical activity; G&A fell mainly on lower consulting and legal fees. Higher interest income partly offset operating costs. With no revenue, operating margins are not meaningful.
Cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash totaled $84.4 million at quarter-end, including $0.3 million of restricted cash. Management said existing resources were expected to fund planned operations for more than 12 months from the filing date. The filing reports no borrowings; liabilities included $35.0 million of deferred license revenue and lease obligations. This deferred revenue is not debt and is expected to be recognized upon EU regulatory approval of Iomab-B.
Business developments and outlook
- Iomab-B: The company is preparing a U.S. Biologics License Application (BLA) following its Phase 3 SIERRA trial. It reported positive FDA feedback on the CMC package, a BLA number, and a planned FDA meeting to discuss clinical and nonclinical sections, expected in Q2 2024. Management said it intended to submit the BLA in 2024 and, based on current assumptions, believed approval could occur in 2025. Immedica is proceeding with an EU marketing application; Actinium licensed it EUMENA rights and remains responsible for certain development and manufacturing activities.
- SIERRA met its primary endpoint of six-month durable complete remission (dCR; p<0.0001), according to the company. The overall-survival secondary endpoint was not met in the intent-to-treat analysis, which the company said was confounded by crossover. An exploratory comparison reported median overall survival of 6.4 months for Iomab-B versus 3.2 months for non-crossover controls. These are trial results reported by the company, not evidence of regulatory approval.
- Actimab-A: Development includes combination studies in relapsed/refractory AML. The company expects the National Cancer Institute collaboration to support further development and cover clinical trial execution and development expenses, which management said should reduce its balance-sheet burden.
- Iomab-ACT: The company is studying targeted conditioning ahead of cell therapy. In April 2024 it announced an IND for a trial with commercial CAR-T therapy; this is subsequent to quarter-end.
- No financial guidance was provided. The company remains pre-commercial and expects ongoing R&D and operating losses. Future revenue depends on development, regulatory approval, commercialization and potential license milestones or royalties.
Capital, risks and other notable items
- In Q1, Actinium sold 1.75 million shares under its sales agreement for $15.0 million gross and $14.7 million net proceeds. Shares outstanding rose from 27.63 million at year-end to 29.40 million at March 31. After quarter-end, it sold 0.4 million additional shares for $3.4 million net proceeds.
- Approximately 1.4 million warrants with a $15 exercise price expired April 23, 2024; the company then had fewer than 13,000 warrants outstanding.
- Key risks include failure or delay in FDA or foreign approval, clinical results not being confirmed or accepted by regulators, reimbursement and market-acceptance uncertainty, dependence on third-party manufacturers and isotope suppliers, intellectual-property challenges, and the need for additional financing. Further equity issuance could dilute shareholders.
- The filing reports effective disclosure controls, no material change in internal control over financial reporting, and no legal proceedings. The company also notes that radioactive materials create regulatory, safety and potential liability exposure.
